I finally found the issue with the lost focus on some devices. It only happens with devices that don't identify themselves as supporting Android TV functionality. In these cases the sliding menu which is hidden gets the focus at times. There is a new preference in 1.5.5-M1 which I'll put up for download later today that should fix this issue.
