Suggestions for the future: Headless RPi support!

I have similar problem. Plexamp appears to be working, but it is not visible to the server:

pi@moode:~ $ sudo systemctl status plexamp
● plexamp.service - Plexamp
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/plexamp.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Wed 2019-07-03 01:06:32 EDT; 2s ago
Main PID: 2429 (node)
Tasks: 6 (limit: 2200)
Memory: 3.4M
CGroup: /system.slice/plexamp.service
└─2429 /usr/bin/node /home/pi/plexamp/server/server.prod.js

Jul 03 01:06:32 moode systemd[1]: Started Plexamp.

I believe that you mentioned that development of the image for Rspberry Pi is possibility. Is this still the case? Lately it is quiet on th Plexamp front.

Thanks

@vuckozagi from what I can make out, the browser client on the server seems to be able to see the PlexAmp on the same device.

Other devices on the network can see the PlexAmp however.

This used to work, and as I am seeing it with the old version of PlexAmp I can only deduce it’s a change in a version of Plex Media Server.

As it’s unlikely you’d want to use the web client on the server to control the PlexAmp on the same machine this doesn’t bother me so much. What is more of an issue is the Ver 2 Beta 2 PlexAmp locking the sound card whenever the service is loaded, even though it’s not playing.

Just because we’ve been working on a massive rewrite/upgrade

Looking forward for it!

What I do love about Roon, when I experimented with the Trial, is its’ RAAT Ethernet Protocol. This allows one to control/play music from any “Roon Ready” device that is connected to the same network as your Roon server from their mobile app. So, anyone with a “network streamer” that is “Roon Ready” can stream music to their streamer, or in my case, my active speakers that have a built in streamer. Very, very cool. I do wish there was something like that with Plexamp/Plex as a platform embedded into devices. But, nothing beats Plex’s UI/UX, esp on the iOS app (with the exception that the volume slider was removed)

Thank you! I have been using the Plex’s “flinging” feature. But what Roon’s protocol allows you to do is play the music using the onboard DACs of network streamers and standalone DACs via Ethernet. At best, I can “fling” music via USB to a stand alone DAC but sound quality via USB is not optimal.

That wholly depends on the DAC and not the type of connection. USB is able to stream hi-res lossless audio just fine.

You are correct in that USB has the bandwidth to stream lossless just fine. However, the “noise” (from the PSU and other elements) that comes from a pc connected to a DAC and the jitter issues degrade the SQ vs Ethernet . I have done A/B testing on my own end to confirm that. I really didn’t want to believe it and used to dismiss it as audiophile myth. But it is true.

That too is solely dependent on how carefully the DAC has been constructed.
You can have cheap USB DACs, but you can also have cheap network players.

Ah, the old chestnut of High-End snake-oil peddlers.
Let me tell you: when Audio CD was young (i.e. 35 years ago), jitter indeed was sometimes a concern. Back then, the output-clock of a digital jack was defined by the stability of the spin of your physical disc in the player. But these times are long over. Nowadays you can have ultra-stable clock generators for your DAC, which are not coupled to the input signal in any way. It doesn’t matter how instable or jittery the signal path before the DAC is. The DAC can take these data packets and play them out using its own clock. Even cheap components nowadays have no jitter issues anymore. “Jitter” is a myth that is being kept alive by a certain part of the industry, to make you buy more “power conditioners” and “directional gold-plated Ethernet cables”.

There is so much about good sound that is pure placebo.

Hi, I’ve been enjoying Plexamp for the last few weeks! I especially like it in my headphone setup running on a Raspberry Pi with USB DAC. The only thing I miss on the Pi is a headphone correction Equalizer. I was trying to use PulseEffects but then realized this is probably not gonna work with Plexamp because it does not use PulseAudio. So yeah a very good EQ as addon would be great.

What’s the most recent version of PlexAmp currently?

Just been looking back though this thread, and it seems to have gone quiet. There are very few posts between now and back in July when I was posting regarding issues with the V2 Beta 2, which as far as I can tell haven’t been resolved.

Can we hope get new release in 2019 ?

Hi, Plexamp on RasberryPi is tentatively close, and would tick all my boxes. Right Now I have it running, and I can connect to it from my Android plexamp, but cannot play Tidal tracks. I am running the Beta 2 version. Has anyone had any luck flinging Tidal to RPI headless plexamp?

Impatiently waiting for the release.
Awesome work @elan

Are we getting Christmas present?

Roon lifetime is now $699. And it works.
