Does anyone know how to contact Plex staff or open a defect in their system so that they can look at it?
The excessive scanning has been reported in several threads. I donât think there has been any kind of official response. But, if we do want help, it would be beneficial for the occasional set of logs to be posted so the developers can find a some common problems and nail down the âbug.â Most of the threads donât include that extra info. So a âit happens to me tooâ with a set of logs to substantiate the weird behaviour of the new music system might be important.
Iâm guessing it doesnât happen to every one - it would have been addressed a lot sooner if that was the case.
To be honest, I donât think fixing this problem is high on the âto-doâ list at Plex headquarters. But we need to provide the information so they can tell us that itâs something we are doing wrong (a possibility), or identify the problem in the scanner (most likely).
Hello,
Same issue on Synology NAS. Version 1.18.4.2171. Keeps scanning all music content, keeps searching for meta data each time for all my albums. Tried all agents, all scanners.
Quite disappointed in Plex team for not even acknowledging this as an issue. I am sure everyone is having it but 90% of the people donât have large music libraries or they donât care. I have a friend who has the same issue but doesnât care. His scanner runs for 5-6 hours at a time. So I guess, to each is his own. I am still waiting on someone to let me know how to reach the Plex support team. Does anyone know?
(sigh)
maybe if we bump this thread (or one of the others with the same topic) up to the top again, someone will see it.
Another Windows Server update today and another disappointment. No change in scanning status. I added one Album and its scanning for 4 hours and still going⊠What a shame.
We really should be attaching logs to prove it is problem that can be re-created consistently and is not a one off thing.
Can you tell me how to get the logs? I will attach mine. Also what section of logs should I post? I am may not want to expose my data directly on a public forum. So maybe I should post some relevant sections which show the issue but does not expose my data in some fashion
Easiest way is to use Plex web.
Click on the âtoolsâ icon in the top right corner, then scroll down to âManageâ on the left side and select âTroubleshootingâ Click the âDownload Logsâ button to save the logs.
Then drag and drop the saved zip file into a post here. I donât think thereâs anything in the logs to worry about. Itâs a pretty standard procedure here, and if you just add partial logs, you will likely be asked for the full set anyways.
Itâs usually best to grab logs right after the problem, and while no one is actually using the server to watch videos, etc.
Just noticed this in the server update to 1.18.8.2461 today:
-
- (Scanning) Speed up repeat scans of large music libraries (#11077)
Hope this fixes this issue for me.
Didnât fix it for me. Still scanning for hours.
Same problem here - repeatedly scanning the full music library on any file change.
Same exact problem here. Migrated my music library from an internal HDD to a RAID5 NAS a few days ago - and suspected that maybe the scan issue was related to the NAS. BTW, PMS is running on a Win10 PC, not the NAS. After I populated the NAS with my media, I mapped it with the old drive letter, and everything seemed fine. However, today I added six albums - and it immediately launched into a long scan. Took nearly an hour! Then I added two more albums and it kicked-off another hour-long scan. And to make matters worse, it only found a few songs from each of the albums I added. This is quite annoying. I am running v 1.19.2.2702⊠Apparently others have had this problem for some time. Is there a fix? Thanks!
Canbonbon,
My my audio and video are all housed on Western Digital 8TB hard drives connected to a Dell Computer running Windows 10. Sorry that this it the first time getting back to you since January. I have been working very hard on my libraries and havenât been on the internet much lately. I am sorry what I did to fix my issue did not work for you.
Thanks for getting back. Unfortunately looks like many other users are having this issue so I am not alone. Hopefully one day they would be able to fix it. For now, I have essentially split my music into like 10 tabs that way it does not refresh all 10 at the same time. Its sort of my âwork aroundâ for this problem. Some day, when Plex fixes this issue, I will combine them back. Just today I saw that there was some fix for music:
Version 1.19.3.2764
New
- (Web) Updated to 4.30.2
Fixes - (First Run) Music libraries added during setup wizard could fail to be created (#11432)
So lets see if that makes any difference
Just found this after doing a dumb move on my library. Iâve changed the path of my main music drive, and from this point forward, every scan is running for hours also.
The odd thing here is that today is the first day Iâm facing this problem. Not a single issue before. Iâve been messing around with my settings to see if I can find something but so far it keeps doing a full scan everytime I press the scan button.
And I second your disapointment towards Plex support.
I donât know if youâre still suffering with this issue, but apparently changing the agent to last.fm solved it for me.

edit: nope, its still scanning everything.
Yup, I can confirm that changing it to Last.FM fixed it for me too. However, I can swear that I have tried that before and at that time it did not work. However, that was months ago. So many updates later, looks like some update fixed this combination. So at the present time, this seems to be the best work around. Thank you acidfrehley for sharing it with the rest of us.
Not sure why it is still scanning for you? Mine is totally fixed now. If I add an album, it quickly scans and stops immediately. Ditto when I remove it. Which is exactly how it behaved before this problem started with so called âPlex Musicâ. I am happy with this workaround and it works for me.
Iâve been messing with both agents. Last.fm usually finds and adds new stuff on point, but it goes out to scan the rest of the library. On the other hand, the plex music agent appears to give me a lot more cover options and info about the albums.
But the worst thing just happened. I noticed a couple albums with the trash can sign so I hit the empty trash button. I donât know how the f. most of my library was on the trash can, so I just wiped it all clear. That also means I lost 30+ playlists, cause when you empty your trash they go to hell aswell.
I seriously hate spotify and others, and I do enjoy managing all my music. But man, I do envy the support and easiness those users receive from platforms as such.
