I am kinda hoping for a Plex employee to respond. Is Plex working to add tone mapping for transcoded HDR content? The ability to transcode 4k video is pretty much pointless without tone mapping…I am hoping Plex is already working on this feature. Anyone know if they are?

This guy goes around the forums berating anyone who wants to transcode 4K or have any kind of flexibility. Its like he just doesn’t understand that someone could possibly have a situation other than his own.

Does anyone think this could work? I think it could. You could add in an HDFury Diva for whatever client is direct playing back the file for dynamic HDR->SDR tone mapping on the fly. It is an expensive solution, sure, but IMHO I believe it is the only solution (ie external video processing) for now …

The ideal solution would be for Plex Media Server to support the Intel Gen 11 GPUs’ hardware HEVC HDR10 Tone Mapping. The benefit to this would be that all transcoding could be done in hardware for HEVC compatible SDR Plex endpoints. This seems like the only easily accessible solution at the moment…
