When is Plex going to add tone mapping for 4K HDR transcoding?

I don’t really understand the problem everyone is having with the “missing” tonemapping feature. Why do you have a large library with 4K HDR-material and no compatible player/display ? Plex has supported multiple versions of movies for a long time and my solution is:

  1. Multiple versions of the movie. UHD HDR/1080p. Plex supports this nicely.
  2. Separate 4K library only for my user.

Transcoding/tonemapping HDR-content is just not a solution to anything. It is a workaround and does not do the content justice. I will not bother wasting CPU/GPU time on it. I usually just create two or more versions of the same movie optimized for most uses. Disk space is cheap.

I personally didn’t like the separate 4K library setup. I ran it for a while but keeping all versions together in the same library is much better IMO. And while Plex has gotten A LOT better at auto choosing the non-4k version if the client doesn’t support 4k, that’s not always the case. I still see 4K transcodes for clients when the TV/client is 4K but the playback quality is set low (because Plex defaults to such a low quality if you sign out of the app or it gets updates at times).

Luckily for me HDR tone mapping works great on my server (docker with nvidia) and it uses very little power of my GPU so I’m none the wiser.

I generally feel bad for anyone running Plex in Windows. That’s how I started with Plex like 8-10 years ago and my gosh is Linux/Docker just worlds better.

When is windows hw accel for tone mapping going to work for Nvidia cards. It is kinda insane its left enabled by default in windows when it pegs the CPU but still shows (hw) in the dashboard.

? I said a solution was implemented? And now plex and Jellyfin both have it which is good, never said plex wouldn’t get it, just that Jellyfin had it in the works at the time.

I’ve noticed this as well on my setup. I have an Nvidia 1070Ti with an i7-8700K running Windows, and Plex can’t even transcode a single 4K movie down to 1080p with Tone Mapping, even while “(hw)” is showing. That is to say, it transcodes a few seconds, but then buffers, over and over again. It’s unwatchable. Taking out the graphics card completely fixes the issue, because then Plex uses QuickSync, which can do it fast enough to make it watchable.

I have gemini lake based NAS which is capable of 2-3 4K HDR tone mapped streams. How do you about that with your 1070ti and i7? In your case tone mapping is made by CPU
