Wol - Wake On Lan

+1 vote here... would be great to not have my server on the whole day!

Would like to bump this feature request and add support. I would love to have WoL support for my htpc :) Pretty please?

any way i can -1 to this?

seriously not much Plex can do here. I would think most modern routers can take care of this for you (I know mine does).

The closest thing Plex could do is utilize something like a bonjour sleep proxy (which you can set up yourself anyway), but that requires something awake to be the proxy (to send the wol packet etc). this stuff should be done on the router level; just install ddwrt/tomato/whatever and be done with it and let the plex team focus on more important (and possible) things...

Is there a way I can -1 your post?  What a silly comment.

Not all routers can be firmware hacked, especially Apple Airports.

I THINK many of the requests in this thread are for the server to be woken by a client in the same subnet - A perfectly valid request.

If i'm mistaken and people are expecting 'Wake on WAN' then you're right there is nothing Plex can do.

that at least is feasible. the OP should be edited to reflect this IMO. Even so, this request already has several nice and automatic external solutions (modern routers do this, bonjour sleep proxy, probably others) so I'd prefer resources allocated elsewhere. just my 2 cents.

Wake on Lan from all clients would be great.  There are 3rd party apps that do this.  Please add this functionality.  My grandma can click the Plex icon on the Roku but no way shes going to click an extra icon for WOL.  Do it for grams.

Can we add this please? This is a must and should be top priority. Saving electricity is very important and my PC/Server has to go to sleep when not in use. It should be able to send a magic packets either with a button or not, that doesn't matter. As long as we have a way to wake up the PC/Server from any app it would be great. Thanks!

I would also like this, as it's almost a deal breaker currently. The setup I have is that the Plex Media Server software runs on a box that is on 24/7 but my NAS box that has all the media goes to sleep so it would be awesome if the server software could wake the NAS box when needed. It is a trivial addition of code to have the server send a ping followed by a WOL packet if it fails (hell, I would do it myself if I had access to the source) and XBMC has it working perfectly and has for a while now.. you could even put that code in when the PMS detects a client connection opening so the NAS is up by the time any media is even selected. There is no reason the same functionality can't be put in to Plex.

This works already?

Or am I wrong?

At least I go to Plex.tv or android client it wakes my PMS. Or is that because I port forward the PMS port to it?

I never have any issues, nor does my brother in the states using his apple tv nor my mate in UK using roku. All clients wake my PC.

Depends on your setup. It’s not hard to flash most home based routers (doesn’t void warranty contrary to what has been said for many manufactures) with alternate software.

Many can be setup to perform a WOL automatically whenever you try and access the computer from LAN or WAN. So really, you don’t need Plex to make any changes if you have the correct setup.

But either way I would setup your PMS server to auto wake to run the nightly butler tasks.

Not hard to reflash with a different firmware but not all routers can be reflashed hence this thread.

I agree with that. I just don’t see Plex adding this so I thought I throw out that it can be done without any modifications to Plex.

I havent flashed anything, virgin superhub sotb, port forward to pms, i guess i'm lucky (altho the hub is a bit flakey and about ÂŁ8 on ebay!) :)

badaas (love that nick),

hub or switch???

Its a cable router/wifi/modem all in 1, and thanks the name is from my wayward ''efnet'' days if anyone remembers them! ;)

Why wouldn't they not add it? The guys at Media Browser added it in a just one day and their team is tiny in comparison while on Plex there are threads dated back years. It is a very basic task. Check for server - if no  server detected send a WOL signal.

A lot of the 3rd party firmware for routers like tomato and dd-wrt are buggy depending on your router. I get much better performance using the stock firmware.

The plex employee said it is something they have considered but that was a year ago.

Any word on this? This is 2015 and we want to save the planet by going green. This request is almost 3 years old and there are requests dated even earlier.

Another +1 to this request.
