Every 4K file I’ve tried with Plex just simply transcodes. Even if the hardware iIplay it on supports it. Which leaves me to think I’ll have to wait for yet another update from Plex.
When the file is played with the “Movies & TV” app the files plays without a hitch, but as soon as I try the same file through the Plex app it fails horribly. Refuses to use DirectPlay and transcodes the file instead. And fails because the server is far from powerfull enough.
What’s going on? What is holding Plex back here?
Both server and Xbox is connected by gbit ethernet.
Movies and TV app will SEE the plex server AND PLAY 4k HDR today. I will NOT trnascode audio.
PLex app transcodes the 4k HDR and ATMOS to 4k washout out crapola and 5.1
The NVidia shield works 100% with plex.
This is super annoying. Xbox One S won’t direct play 4k HEVC movie. I’ve selected the AC3 5.1 audio and it shows as direct play but is transcoding to h.264. Even with hardware transcoding my Xeon E3-1231 V3 and R9 Fury can’t quite keep up, still buffers every couple minutes. Playing through the Movies and TV app it doesn’t appear to transcode but it still stutters.
I’ve been able to play ‘7.1.2’ and ‘leaf trailer’ with Atmos from the dolby page through Plex -> XBox One X -> Denon X4300H.
All other content including an Atmos sound track I’ve thrown at my amp, failed to detect Atmos and displayed Dolby Surround (whatever that means).

I’ve gotten the Moves and TV app to play 4k but not atmos. Plex claims no transcoding was being done. Also starts suttering quickly after starting.
I’ve read in other threads that Dolby Atmos support for third-party applications was added by Microsoft. Am I understanding that wrong? Not having Dolby Atmos support for the XBOX One is a deal-breaker for me. Does anyone know if this is on the roadmap for Plex Player on XBOX One?
Atmos support is indeed enabled for third party apps (Netflix, for example), and hopefully Plex will be adding it soon.
My experience with Nvidia Shield is not the same as yours. It is not working with Plex 4K and HDR content. Unless I transcode, I can’t play the direct stream without getting a scrambled image that is not watchable on the Shield. I have tried rolling back the app to the original install and it still doesn’t work.
Anyone aware of when this is being resolved for Xbox / Plex?
Just started getting 4k content and it’s no good currently using Xbox and Plex. But works with Plex through my TV app. Same thing as everyone else buffering for 30 seconds.
Thanks,
I haven’t seen an update yet. I currently use an HTPC to run Plex Player in my home cinema room, just so I can have uncompressed video and audio, specifically UHD blu-ray rips with Dolby Atmos / DTS:X. I want to replace it with an Xbox One S/X, but I won’t make that purchase until it supports all of the current formats. It’s unfortunate that the Xbox One S/X can handle it, and from what I’ve read Microsoft made the functionality available to third-parties, but Plex still hasn’t added the functionality yet.
Looks HDR is here finally!
I’m in the exact same dilemma as @pimpinonline , I have a chromebox running PMP embeddded so I can get Dolby Atmos to my system but it doesn’t have the horsepower to direct play x265/4K.
I’ve been waiting since the announcement of the OneX to have the Plex app be at parity with the Nvidia shield so I can have a single device for all my entertainment needs.
So happy HDR is here! I’ve bought my Plex Pass Lifetime!
HEVC/4K plays fine with Direct Play/Stream on my X. “Sadly” only have FullHD Plasma without HDR, so HDR is tonemapped incorrectly, not Xbox specific issue, Shield has same issue. HDR content on non HDR TV gives washed out colours/contrast.
So Plex for Xbox now direct plays HEVC but still needs to transcode Atmos/DTS-X, correct?
Yes, I saw ‘Direct Stream’ on a MKV 4K BD Rip with HEVC 4K HDR video and TrueHD Atmos Audio I saw Transcoding to AAC on audio part. As long as there is no image based subtitle used.
Sadly direct BD Rips have PGS (image subs), which triggers transcoding on the Xbox One (X).
Does anyone know specifically why there is no support for Dolby Atmos yet? I mean, is it a licensing (cost) issue, is it a technical limitation, or is it just taking this long to develop the integration? I would love to hear from someone at Plex in this area.
Not sure if it’s still a limitation in the XBOX. So far TrueHD is only working in the Blu-ray player. The Dolby Atmos on Netflix is apparently DD+ with Atmos and uses Edge as rendering engine. DD+/EAC3 is also still being transcoded, even though Netflix can play that natively through the Edge backend. Real pass through should be in the possibilities since the April update for XBOX. Seeing the update was released in the past two weeks… frame rate switching for normal apps was also added in this update which is already implemented.
As long as that is not fixed will keep using my Shield TV.

It’s a technial limitiation imposed by Microsoft for third party apps. The general issue is that the Xbox by default decodes any audio in order to (among others) mix the OS sounds into it (e.g pling pling pling when you navigate) rendering Dolby Atmos impossible (everything gets transcoded to PCM internally and then outputed to whichever format you selected in sound options).
Now what certain Apps like the Blu-ray App are doing is going to an “exclusive mode” which mutes everything except the App itself so Dolby Atmos passthrough to the receiver is possible.
Now the confusion here may be that certain third party apps like Netflix or Vudu do offer Dolby Atmos streaming. But they do so by being a HTML5 Edge browser app, therefore getting some of the access that only first party Microsoft apps are getting, including “exclusive audio mode” in order to support Dolby Atmos.
Recently Plex implemented variable refresh rate (or “display mode switching”) and HDR support so from a technical point of view they have exhausted pretty much everything that can be implemented by a third party app developer on Xbox.
@danieldeni @Wiidesire Thanks for the information. This totally helps. So it sounds like this will never be a feature coming to Xbox One S/X… that’s a bummer. I guess the Intel NUC will continue to be my HTPC.
So if they are HTML 5 apps, maybe the team should have considered that as a the way to build the new applications.
I believe they said audio pass through was a possibility though, it would just hurt those that don’t understand the concept that there would be no audio if your receiver doesn’t support it.
