Stumbled upon this insane router. Must be insane if the price tag is 499$
Just out of curiosity, any leaks about Plex performance on this device? Are we going to see topics “I’ve spent 500 bucks on router to run Plex Server …”
there is already a thread about it were: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/241543/netgear-router-plex-server
Wanna know about :
NO BUFFERING OR LAG WITH TRANSCODING which they state on their website ?

Unfortunately that forum is not for the public at large - so if there are any large members of the public that would be interested in this device moving that thread out here into the wild - or supporting this one - would be ‘the right thing to do’.
I fail to see the benefit Plex would derive from keeping cutting edge devices that work in conjunction with Plex a niche group secret… but Plex is quite famous for shooting themselves in the feet… it’s no wonder they spend so much money on shoes.
Couldnt agree more. Why should it be for Plex Pass members only ? Pay to get info on a new Product release ?

It is a mystery. The same mystery ensues when I see employees carting off all discussions about Plex-DVR to ‘private’ forums away from those who may pay for access to the service… it does boggle the mind…
I suggest Plex watch ‘Mad Men’ wherein they may get a clue about the power of (free) advertising… and the benefits of drinking lakes of hard liquor and smoking Lucky Strikes… they’re ‘Toasted’ after all and that has to be a good thing.
I thought the private forums for DVR were just PlexPass forums - you need a PlexPass to use DVR. I don’t see any shenanigans, but I may be missing something. If you are referring to Plex Cloud, then I don’t see the issue with leaving that forum open to only members of the Beta at this point, but that is just my opinion.
Well… maybe it’s me that’s missing something, but in my mind if ongoing discussions about Plex-DVR (or the aforementioned Router/Plex thingy) were underway in a public venue and the members of the public were reading them and perhaps became interested in the service - so much so that they’d be willing to fork over some cash to get it… that could be of some use to Plex…
…but it’s quite clear Plex and I aren’t on the same wave-length and our minds operate quite differently (horizontal scrolling, discovery hubs, forced ‘features’ that end up being hazards to navigation, no user options to disable said hazards, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…).
@drinehart I noticed your edit and you do bring up a valid point, but my mind keeps tripping over the stubborn notion that Plex should be taking advantage of every single opportunity to turn non-subscribers into subscribers by any means necessary. This would, of course, benefit Plex in that it would generate more revenue and with it the ability to bring more hands on deck, perhaps even to the point of running out of things to do at which point all these empty hands would be given ‘busy’ work - like developing user configurable options for any number of the etceteras I mentioned previously and THAT would go a long way to turning this non-subscriber into a subscriber…
I will now refrain from derailing the thread any further… apologies…
The other topic is not official, just posted in Plex Pass area. We went sideways a bit.
Specification looks nice but still I couldn’t justify the price. I’m also very interested in “With the combination of the X10’s upload speed and your Plex Media Server running on the router, you don’t need to worry about buffering or lag with transcoding.”
Why is it not official? Its official from Netgear, so how come its a secret to the public from Plex?
Doesn’t make any sense at all.
I just purchased the router today, as it stand and what i could tell, You have to get an external HDD attached and then Plex will be install on the drive. Now here is my dilemma, it seems like or it is that when adding a library you are only limited to the external drive ONLY which would be pointless for my use as I have a NAS which has all my files. Is there a means to resolve this, work around or something. Otherwise I will have to return this. Any help will be much appreciated. Thx

the external drive should be a USB3 device. USB2 is just too slow.

How do I add media to my Nighthawk X10 device running Plex Media Server?
To add media there are two ways of doing this.
- One is to add the media to the USB drive before adding it to the Nighthawk X10 device.
- The other option is to use Netgears ReadySHARE feature to reach the USB drive over the network via
SAMBA. It will show you what the share name is when navigating to the ReadySHARE page.
I’m using USB3 with the USB Drive. But can i access my NAS over the network or that’s not possible. I have been using Plex for quite a while now and this has never been a problem. ReadySHARE only lets me access the attached drive only
There is no further info available on this yet.
I already asked internally, but have not gotten any concrete info. I will come back as soon as we know more.
Great… Thx
A FAQ has been made available for this device
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/230934267-Netgear-Nighthawk-X10-Router
If you have all your media on a NAS don’t waste your money buying the X10- the server and media will only work via the USB.
Currently no way to get plex to see your nas even if connected to the router via LAN connection. I found this out the hard and expensive way - I now just have a Super expensive router and unable to use the media server option which is the reason I got the X10 in the first place.
Netgear forums indicate the same issue for other people who purchased assuming they could connect to a NAS…
Hopefully plex and netgear will issue a firmware update that allows you to see the nas connected but let’s see.
If all your media is stored on external drives you will be fine.
Can someone finally post decent review please? I think I will speak for few people when I say skip unboxing, skip setting up, skip all the crap we already know, show us transcoding performance with 1, 2 and more(?) streams, 4k playback maybe, make it bleed and tell us how it’s performing router duties while heavy “Plexing”.

I will connect my external drives up and give it a test playing 1080p via internal wifi and remote and see what happens
Incase anyone was still watching this thread, the latest firmware update for this thing enables you to map NAS/Network drives to add to ready share and Plex, my initial testing seems very positive.
