Playback Volume Leveling

I feel sure this must have been requested before, but if so I can't find the thread.

Now that playlists for music work (somewhat), and music can be shuffled, Playback Leveling is a pretty intuitive and important next step. Many tracks from different albums are recorded (or encoded) at very different volumes, and when shuffling that can mean sudden volume differences and constantly fumbling for the remote.

On-the-fly playback leveling based on file volume analysis would be ideal, but even if Plex could just check if playback volume meta data already exists in files (as all my music does), and uses that to adjust volume, that would be good too.

Yes please!

First step would be to use already embedded replaygain values in the audio files.

Next step would be to add them on 'analyze' if not present.

It applies only to PHT, not all the other clients. Plus, the original poster never reported if he got it to work succesfully.

By the way clients work it depends by the player provided by the framework. This is not really in the hands of Plex.

An example: Plex/web on Chrome. It depends on what the player in the browser (and used by Plex) supports.

Just a quick addition regarding PHT and Replaygain settings:

After some digging AFIK this feature doesn't appear to be supported by PHT and changing settings in guisetting.xml has no effect.

A working alternative would be to use PLEXbmc as client which includes also Replaygain support.

This has become all the more essential with the introduction of Plex mixes and Mood mixes.

I know adding ReplayGain and/or volume leveling support is more of an advanced feature. As others have stated, when shuffling music with varying levels of loudness, this feature becomes essential to ensure a smooth listening experience. Most users probably don't even realize the importance of this, but I'm sure most would appreciate it if it's implemented.

To make it more user-friendly, why not have Plex analyze the volume normalization information for each track/album when music is imported into the library? This way, even if users have no idea what ReplayGain is, the data is already present in the Plex database. At that point, the user would just need to enable the option in their Plex client's settings. There would be no need to worry if ReplayGain tags already exist in their music files. The R128 algortithm (http://r128gain.sourceforge.net) is widely adopted and used by many other popular music players.

Adding this feature would be a huge win for users who use Plex for music listening. I can only say that Plex just keeps getting better every day! Thank you for all that you do!!

How about ReplayGain for the audio in videos too?

Yep, I would like some Replaygain, R128 or Apple Sound Check equivalent in plex. That was really a pain in the *ss when listening music sync on my mobile during my last journey.

Yes Replay Gain support please

I would definitely like this. I have play lists with many TV shows and always have to adjust the volume between episodes. Especially when we adjust it for a low volume episode and then the next episode is really loud, it can be defening.

I would like it for Android TV (Sheild Pro) and Roku’s.

We needs this feature or the music support is useless. Not fun to be in my car and adjust the sound volume for nearly every songs I have, while I’m driving!

I’m interested in this too. Pretty large catalog. I have run MP3Gain against my whole library.

I’ll put in yet another vote for this feature. Essential for Plex Mixes especially.

On a related note, there are a lot of good feature requests here that rarely get any response from Plex. Is there any way to increase transparency between the dedicated, passionate (and often paying) user base and the developers?

Adding my vote for this essential feature. Having used it on iTunes now and my Subsonic client, I can’t switch to Plex full time without it.

Adding my vote for this feature too.
