I guess at this point I'd be considered an early adopter, I purchased a raspberry Pi model B before they upped the RAM to 512, so mine is only 256MB. I tried rasplex multiple times many versions ago and every time I tried it, it would crash when I tried to just about anything.
Back when I was trying there were forum posts here with other people running into similar problems. I looked and don't see any recent threads on that topic.
What is the current state of rasplex and the 256MB model b's? Is it stable? I previously gave up and have since just been running raspbmc without issue, but I would prefer rasplex, if it's stable....
I also bought an original but own a newer Pi as well. I’ve found that the most stable version for the 256MB Pi is 0.1.35 and I run it on my old Pi. It does do strange things and often needs rebooting but if you have patience it’s usable. I have it on the TV in my bedroom so I’m at least comfortable while it’s rebooting I couldn’t get any higher versions - including 0.2.x - to play video files.
I think running plain XBMC without too many plugins on the 256 works really well. I had no problems, but then my attention started getting reeled in by Plex Media Server, so running Rasplex sounded very appealing.
I tried on both 256 and 512MB and I saw a world of difference!
The 256 model was swapping and struggling. Initial configuration took several minutes to switch between the views and I wasn't really able to play anything reliably.
But the 512 just started up, I configured in 1 minute, smooth action, no crashes/hangs since.
I'm running "bleeding" version 0.2.2. I haven't tried the older 0.1.x versions. I'm sure they run better like silne75 says, but running an old version is just not... ...me... ;)
My 256MB's are now re-purposed as emulation game stations, sound streaming receivers and web servers. They're doing that awfully well.
Here in Sweden I can get a 512MB for £30 incl. shipping overnight. Personally I think it was worth it to get rid of all the issues and stay on the edge. ;)
I do hope more work will be put into optimizing xbmc base for 256. RAM usage seems to have inflated a bit since the XBMC12 alphas.

I fully agree, exept for the Sweden part. A month ago I tried the 256mb version. Although it worked most of the time, it wasn't fun because of the strange things. And with a device like Rasplex, you want it too work all the time, especially if you need to watch a movie with your girlfriend/date/etc. Get the 512mb, it works flawlessly!
