2X 2.66GHz X5650 for Plex transcoding

Hi all!

I’m planning to change my old server running on a clone PC to a HP Server with 2X 2.66GHz X5650 processors.
Would the processors be able to do transcoding for 2 or 3 streams?

Thanks in advance!

That is a really bad system for Plex. Outdated CPU, outdated drives with less than 1 TB storage. I would not waste money on it.

You would be better off buying a N100 mini PC with a 1 TB SSD.

CPU: Introduced in 2010, so 15 years old. Pulls 95 watts.
Drives: Less than 600 GB storage (4 x 146GB).
Memory: Uses DDR3 memory, which is OK, but slow by today’s standards.

To directly answer your question: Yes, it could transcode two or three 1080p video streams. 4K is out of the question.

Thanks for your fast reply!

I have other server with the media so drives is not an issue here, but well noted your comments about CPU and RAM.

Thanks again.
Regards.

And what’s your opinion on a i7 7th gen?
Can add also a GTX 1050 2GB GPU…
Trying to recycle here…

thanks!

i7-7700 (plain one)

8800 passmarks (Quad core)
UHD 630 GPU

Solid performer for PMS (I have three of these for PMS testing)
