Common Questions
As more folks begin exploring the new Plex Experience Preview, there are often questions that come up. Throughout the preview period we will consolidate these in list below.
What about TV and big-screen devices?
The preview is available to test on Apple TV (tvOS), with additional platforms coming soon.
Does this mobile release include tablets?
You can install the Plex Preview Preview on tablet devices, but our initial focus has been specifically on mobile phones. As the preview period goes on, we do plan to include more tweaks and improvements to make the experience on tablets better. Just be aware that there might be some bumps when using a tablet to start.
How do I join/participate in the Preview?
Visit our How to access the Plex Experience Prevew topic for detailed instructions on joining, for either Android (mobile) or iOS.
I can’t do X anymore? Why can’t I find Y?
First, check the list of features (above) not currently in the app to see if the feature is already noted. If not, please post in this forum category to share your feedback. Be sure to check to see if there is already an existing topic about your issue. If so, add a reply to that topic. Otherwise, you can create a new topic.
We also recommend reviewing our How to get help in the forums topic for information and tips on posting useful details in a report. For instance, attaching logs from the app is usually very helpful in investigating issues.
Does the app require a specific version of Plex Media Server?
Yes. You must be running Plex Media Server version 1.41.2 or newer to fully support the new Plex app. Please visit our site Downloads page for the latest server packages.
Is personal media playback limited without an activation/unlock purchase?
During the preview period, the app will allow full streaming of personal media from a Plex Media Server without any mobile app activation/unlock. We’ll be reviewing this area of functionality prior to the full public release next year.
What about support for music and photos?
As we recently announced, we’re splitting out music and photos into their own apps, allowing for better focus on those media types. Music will continue in our awesome Plexamp music app. For photos, we’ve launched a new “Plex Photos” beta app. (Read the above-linked announcement post for details.)
What if I don’t want access to free movies, shows, live TV, or Discover?
Users who are not interested in one of our free services can disable that for their account as a whole. That can be done via the Online Media Sources account settings.
Will in-app purchases for Plex Pass or Rentals be supported?
Currently, in-app purchases are not available in the Plex Experience Preview. If you’d like to start a Plex Pass subscription or (for US and Canadian users) rent a movie, you can do so in our existing apps and website:
- Plex Pass subscriptions
- Movie rentals (United States and Canada only)
