A NAS to do all the heavy lifting, and nothing else

So using my old NAS, PMS on my Nvidia Shield and Direct Play should be enough for in-home streaming using ethernet?

A lot of people might just haven’t the chance to test the options and they just assumed they need a high end NAS.

As I mentioned all you need is direct play 1080p, then even something like this with the hard drive included would do the trick

WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage - NAS - WDBCTL0040HWT-NESN (Certified Refurbished) Amazon.com

I’m sure any Synology would be fine as long as no transcode. If in the future you need transcoding for internet streaming etc , just use your shield server to do so.

Try to see if Plex has app for your NAS you might even be able to install Plex on your old NAS as a Plex server

Mind you this is purely direct… no browser… no mobile… only clients like the shield that support practically everything will work.

Synology boxes are underpowered for how much they cost. I should know. I currently own 2 of them. DS1815+ and a DS1817+ with around 100TB of storage.

Qnap has some very nice stuff but it will set you back some. I am a huge fan of the synology OS.
I have a VMware ESX cluster running Synology VMs that run all my plex servers etc.

I suggest getting a little HP micro/mini (whatever they call it.). They have a real proc and way more ram that most nas boxes … they can usually hold 2 or more hard drives and can do more heavy lifting than most cheap nas boxes. You can usually get one of the mini servers for around 350ish.

As far as the OS. You could put windows on it or whatever your comfortable with. Or if you are wanting to tinker you can get the Synology OS to load on it.

There are quite a few forums that have guides on how to install it.

Have a good one,

Thank you.
Compared to yours: the 917 and 918 has 4K video hw encoding support

I like the expenology system. But the disadvantage is that it’s still homebrew.
So the life is easier with an official synology DS.

Note they mention their media player when it comes to this H/W support…

If you encode all of your files to Direct Play to your end devices, Plex needs surprisingly little to run. At that point it’s just passing the buck to the client.

I have now a DS918 since one week and its amazing. Much better than my old DS411+II.

Forget everything other
