My family are really bad about leaving their kids Roku's playing continuous files and forgetting that they're on, sometimes going for multiple days. Not a huge deal but it does eat up my upload bandwidth and I'd love it if instead of having to bug them to go and stop the file playing on Roku if I could go into Plex/web and stop the files myself.
I could be in the minority here in asking for this but for me it would be a really nice addition.
Still no response but getting some likes so hopefully more people "like" this request and Plex listens.
I even tried shutting Plex down but as soon as it started back up the remote Roku started playing the file again. Again it would be wonderful to be able to stop that file from playing and eating up my bandwidth. I'm sure I can't be the only one who's a victim of continuous play that's likely enabled to keep kids happy when their show ends so that another will start and then it's forgotten that Plex is on and the TV is just turned off.
I have run into this issue as well with remote family.
You can stop sharing that library with them and that will end the stream.
Leave it that way until they notice that the library is gone and ask "Hey, what happened to the share".
Then you can educate them on the issue. It only took me doing it twice before they lkared the lesson
Yeah I know you can do that but that creates more work for me and in the end it doesn't change anything unfortunately. Plus I don't want to be bothered the next time the kids turn it on to watch Frozen and they can't get it, freak out, contact me when I'm at work in a meeting or whatever and then I'm the bad guy for cutting them off lol.
I have had remote Rokus get "stuck" a couple of times. Almost the same situation. The Roku doesn't seem to realize the movie is over and keeps requesting data from my server, even if the remote users are using another channel like Netflix. It's a bug in the roku apparently, I asked about it in another section of this forum once. The only resolution was to "un-share" and/or get them to reboot the roku. So the ability to stop a stream (without removing the share or contacting the people giving me grief) would be great, because sometimes it can take hours or days to get a hold of someone to do the necessary work at their end.

Oh yeah that's super annoying especially if you're in Plex/Web and you keep getting the message every 2 seconds that so and so are playing such and such file.

LOL - had to say "OUCH" out loud when you mentioned Frozen in an earlier post. I got ".. is watching Frozen" messages for 2 days when, as luck would have it, a Roku got stuck the morning the family went out of town for the week end. And like you said, stopping and restarting the server has no effect, and I never thought to remove the share at the time.
This happens with a friend I share Plex with. His FireTV doesn’t shut off, and his kids just pause the movie and shut off the TV. I have to constantly text him to remind him to go in and hit the stop button. His kids never remember. Recently they went on vacation, and I had to just unfriend them to get it to stop. Would be great to have a simple “cancel stream” button. Or even better, a feature that cancels a stream if it’s been paused for more than an hour or so. (They can always resume it later.)
Can’t believe we haven’t had any comment on this from Plex. There’s another feature request I and a lot of other people are wanting in bandwidth and stream quality controls server side. Hasn’t been any input from Plex as far as I can tell. This would go nicely with that other feature request though and has my +1
There are already a few feature requests for this on the forum. Here’s just one of them. It so happens to be one I started, but oh well… There are others out there, too, just need to search to find them.
All of the +1’s in the world aren’t actually voting for the feature. You have to vote by putting a “Like” on the first post of the thread. If you move your cursor into that post, a menu of sorts shows up on the line that Flag and Quote are on. One of the choices is Like. Click it once, the count goes up by one. Click it again and your vote goes away.

Pretty sure I did a thorough search when I created this and didn’t find anything but it was 18 months ago and on the old forum system so who knows. Not something I expect to ever come to fruition.
