Problem Statement
Many movies nowadays have different versions:
- theatrical and director’s cut,
- 2.35:1 aspect ratio and open matte,
- 2D and 3D versions
Plex team suggests to handle “those situations <…> by Splitting the movie into separate library items” (link).
IMHO, it doesn’t look nice - your library will have duplications of the same titles but with different versions. Below is what should be done.
What should be done
Users should have the ability to assign some string literals to different versions of the same movie, so during choosing the version, users will see these versions as, e.g., “Blu-Ray” and “Open Matte”.
User Scenario and examples
I came up with two simple examples, but anyone can come up with their own examples:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: it has the 2.35:1 version released on Blu-Rays and Open Matte version released in the Internet.
Scenario:
- Preparation of the library:
- User names two versions of the movie as, e.g., “Blu-Ray” and “Open Matte”.
- Watching the movie
- User opens the page with the movie in whichever Plex client
- User wants to play Open Matte version of the movie
- User clicks Play button
- Plex suggests to choose a version: “Blu-Ray” or “Open Matte”
- User chooses “Open Matte”
- Plex started to play “Open Matte” version
Watchmen (the movie): it has theatrical, director’s cut and the ultimate cut.
Scenario:
The same as for Harry Potter. The version can be named as “Theatrical”, “Director’s Cut” and “The Ultimate Cut”.
P.S. this is just my vision of user scenario, Plex team can come up with better UX ideas.
