just so you’re aware, it works in Plexamp
This is needed - crazy that we have filters for stuff like “Studio” but not for something obvious like how long (duration) a video, movie or song is.
Sorry, maybe I wasn’t very clear the first time:
Is there a particular technical barrier to this feature being implemented in Plex? Not Plexamp. Plex. The program Plex that has videos in it. That’s what I’m asking about. There are requests for it as early as 2016. Libraries can be sorted by duration, so I know duration metadata is stored properly. Externally this seems like implementing would be fairly trivial and there’s no UI/UX concern beyond conveying to the user the format for inequalities. I hate to sound entitled but it feels like this is a relatively low hanging fruit and it’s a little baffling. I was really surprised to get an immediate reply that completely ignored my question and just suggested something I don’t care about works in a program I don’t use rather than responding to what I was asking for in the program I do use. I’m a little confused. Am I in the wrong forum?
Want to start by saying Plexamp is an amazing app. Smart playlists are fantastic and better than I’ve used on many other services. The fact that I can have smart playlists with my own music rocks!!
Is there a way that you may be able to add a setting that provides functionality to omit tracks from playlists based on track length?
Would be good to have smartlists stay away from skits and other ‘dated’ tracks that the artist felt were funny at the time.
Thanks in advance
Thankyou, was clearly using the wrong search criteria.
Much appreciated ![]()
Plex currently allows users to sort media by duration, but introducing a duration filter would unlock powerful customization for organizing libraries and creating smart collections. This feature would empower users to curate content based on runtime, catering to diverse preferences and use cases. Below are key reasons why this addition would enhance Plex’s functionality:
- Targeted Smart Collections
- Examples:
- “90-Minute Comedies” (perfect for quick laughs).
- “Epic Films” (3+ hour movies for immersive viewing).
- “Family Shorts” (sub-60-minute films for kids).
- Combine with existing filters (genre, decade, rating) to create hyper-specific collections.
- Practical User Scenarios
- Time-conscious viewers: Filter movies that fit a free timeslot (e.g., “Under 2 Hours”).
- Cinephiles: Isolate Oscar-worthy epics or avant-garde short films.
- Parents: Quickly find child-friendly shorts.
- Implementation Suggestions
- Slider or input fields for minimum/maximum duration (in minutes).
- Preset ranges: “Short (<60m),” “Standard (90–120m),” “Long (>150m).”
- Compatibility with Advanced Filters (e.g., “Horror movies between 80–100 minutes”).
- Technical Feasibility
- Duration data is already parsed by Plex; integrating it as a filter would mirror existing logic (e.g., release year/rating filters).
an option to sort movies by there length to easily find bad downloads or an option to sort folders tab by size
Please add Duration as an Advanced Filter. I am sure I am not the only one that has a ton of random media in their libraries and I have a lot of stuff coming from all over, youtube, facebook, tiktok etc… and I’d like to sort through it by duration ie Less than 9 minutes but longer than 4 minutes etc… when I have a ton of web clips I’m trying to sort through. If we had the ability to use that filter on all platforms, that would be even better.
+1 for Track Length filter especially for music
