Add possibility to send a magic packet (WOL/WOW) if the server is off

Is it possible to add the option to send a magic packet which allows to wake up a server each time plex try to connect add the server doesn’t answer?
It will allow to reduce the energy consumption of the server when it is not used.
Thanks
Server Version#: Version 1.16.3.1402
Player Version#:

It sounds like

  1. your power savings is already set too deep
    -or-
  2. you’re asking for PMS to be started on the host when it’s requested by a player.

Question #1:

PMS polls Plex.tv and Plex.tv polls your server periodically.
Because of this mechanism, the server never really sleeps and the hard drives never spin down.
NAS drives don’t mind because they are rated to be run 24/7/265.

Question 2:

It seems this is more your intent? Have PMS sleep (not run) until needed.
WOL packets are intended to wake a host which is monitoring it.
The entire host may sleep but if PMS is not running when the host does go to sleep, there is nothing which will start PMS when the host is woken by that magic packet. WOL packets don’t include information like “Wake the host and start Plex”.

Which case are you trying to solve?

Thanks for your answer.
My case is the second one I think.
I have PMS installed on my computer (under Linux).
I want that my computer sleeps when it is not used, to save energy.
I do it and when I want to access it with my smartphone for exemple, I use a WOL application to first wake up my computer then my Plex app can access to my Plex server.
It would be very convenient if my plex app could automatically send a WOL packet when it detects that the server is not accessible. Without to use an other application.

The configuration you need is;

  1. PMS starts normally when the system boots.
  2. When the system sleeps, it must “hibernate”
  3. When you hit it with WOL, it wakes.
  4. PMS resumes because it was active when the system slept.

PMS hasn’t been well tested in this environment so how gracefully it wakes would be an interesting experiment. Servers don’t usually sleep so you can understand the edge-case usage?

Yes I think it is a edge case usage but it could be a basic use case.
I prefered to install PMS on my computer (plug to my TV) instead of a server or a NAS but I don’t need to access my media (and all the people who have access to my PMS too) every time. So I think it would be an interesting option to be able to wake up your PC/server or NAS using the WOW/WOL tools which are very simple to implement.
Do you think that could be added to your tools?
It would be great!

Thank you!

As I already stated, you can already effect this behavior:

  1. Start computer normally
  2. Start PMS normally
  3. Allow computer to sleep while PMS is running
  4. Computer will wake when next properly triggered.

What you ask is a computer/OS level function. It is out of scope for an application to do this but you should be able to have the same functionality with the steps above.

Yes I can do it with my computer. It sleeps and I just have to move the mouse or tap on my keyboard to unsleep my computer and be able to access to PMS from any device (the computer on which PMS is installed but also remotly using my phone for exemple). What I would like is to be able to unsleep my computer remotly (using my phone or any device not connected to the same network than my computer with PMS) then to be able to use PMS also remotly.
I can also do it using special applications on my phone like “Wake On Lan” or “WolOn” which allow first to unsleep the computer, then I can go on my Plex App on my phone (or any other device) to access my PMS and see my medias.
The idea would be to add something in the Plex App on my phone (and the same in all the apps) which do the same thing as the WOL applications (send a magic packet to the computer) each time it detects that the PMS is not available, in order to try to wake up first.
I know that usually servers are always ON but it could be a good way to save energy specially for all your customers who saved their personal media which are not used every time but occasionally.

Thank’s

David

I don’t think it is a computer/OS level function. Could you check my last message with more description?

Thanks!

My servers (Windows 7) are all set to WOL… but… since PMS Version 1.15 + it no longer works… If I stop Plex the system sleeps… PMS keeps handshaking with Plex TV, so they won’t sleep.
WOL through the internet can be a challenge to setup and get it to work correctly,
Sending the magic packet that way would take some real magic…

You’re in Linux. I can’t help you at all with Windows.
