Add trailers to films from local media using URL from YouTube

I think it would be cool to be able to personalize your plex even further by being able to apply trailers from YouTube by URL to films from you’re local media as storing them would take up unnecessary space.

I suppose that’s a rather tricky one from a licensing point of view; e.g. YouTube usually doesn’t own licenses for the content – you might find it a grey area if you use those videos in a private context. It’ll be a totally different story if Plex as a business will be doing this in their software.

Maybe a silly question… what’s wrong with the trailers you get through Plex?

Sometimes the trailers from Plex’s extras aren’t good. They may be low-quality/wrong aspect ratio, or “coming soon to home video” type trailers and not the original theatrical ones. Or maybe we want to use the “teaser trailer” instead of the full trailer.

I don’t know about linking to YouTube, for the reasons you mentioned, but I would like to be able to override the dedicated trailer button on the pre-play screen to go to a local file instead of the Plex-provided trailer. Like, it could just be a “hidden” extra. Ex: You add the desired trailer file named specifically “Main Trailer-trailer.mkv” and it doesn’t appear at the bottom with the other extras, but it plays when you hit the “Trailer Button” on the pre-play page.
