Add VPN Service

I’m not an IT guy but my understanding is that Plex keeps a current directory of the IP addresses of our servers. Then when we connect we have a secure “tunnel” to stream videos/music/photos, right? Meanwhile, the server can also reach out and grab metadata, subtitles, posters, TV series music, etc.

So it seems to me that all the tools are there for Plex to offer a premium service to access our home network as a VPN provider. Like I said, I’m not nearly techie enough to open up a port on my server with any confidence in the network security. But Plex could totally do it with likely minor coding (I think).

I’ve been using ExpressVPN (supposedly one of the best VPN services) for years primarily when in China. But that firewall is getting really hard to break through over the last two years, they basically know exactly what to look for. OTOH, if I could use my home server, the amount of data traffic would be so miniscule that the censors would likely ignore it.

So please Plex, offer us a VPN service on our servers!

If I understand your request correctly, this already exists, and is called Plex Relay.

In case direct connections to your Plex Media Server are impossible, your PMS sets up a secure tunnel to a Plex cloud server, which is where the clients also connect to.

Plex Relay proves my point that Plex “can” create a VPN like connection from the client to the server. My request is to leverage those existing capabilities to offer a complete VPN service for the client computer/device to use for all Internet activity (eg, email, browsing, social media, etc).

So for example, if I’m in China and can’t access GMail, I can VPN to my server at home to reach the Internet.

Plex has no plans to enter the VPN business. I’m going to close this request.
