Adding payment method gets Error: 429 - API Rate Limit Exceeded

I would like to purchase a lifetime membership to Plex before the price increase on July 1. When I attempt to add a payment method I get a 429 error. I will try again later, but wanted to bring this to webmaster attention. This is not a personal server issue, this is on the plex.tv website before I’ve downloaded the software. Is there a workaround? Should I vpn my location somewhere else?

I asked one of our billing dept folks and they said that error indicates that we had too much activity from the IP address you were using and it was temporarily rate limited for security purposes.

Some things to try:

  • Disable any VPN that may be active
  • Ensure that “javascript” is enabled in the browser
  • Clear your browser’s cache/cookies/LocalStorage
  • Temporarily disable browser extensions/addons/plugins
  • Use a Private/Incognito browser window
  • Use a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.)
  • Use a different device (e.g. phone/tablet vs computer)
  • Test on a different network (e.g. 4G/LTE rather than WiFi)

In less common cases, it could also be caused by bad/stale DNS information from your provider. You could try switching to use a free service such as:

Thanks for your help. I was not using a VPN at the time, but I was on a work network, so they may be served from a blacklisted set of ips or something. Either way, I just tried again a couple hours later and was able to add my payment details. Thanks again.
