Album sort order broken in PMS 1.14.0.5468 - **STILL BROKEN**

That sounds like a good plan.
Please enable debug logging right from the start.

Well, at least on this most recent problem (Bug #7349), good things once again come to those who wait. This issue with the sort order selection not following the choice made has been completely resolved from my perspective.

While super exciting (happy dance), this of course has no bearing on the main problem reported originally in this thread which was that albums within the artist page when sorted by date, either ascending or descending, are not taking the full date into account - only the year and then sorting alphabetically when there is more than one release in the same year. Creating a custom search filter from the root of the music library and sorting by date shows the full date (day, month, and year) and albums are ordered correctly.

This continues to work as expected for me.
Have you tried again to toggle the album sorting back and forth on an artist?

… and I’m back @OttoKerner . My apologies for losing sight of our conversation. Sick, pregnant wife and then birth of a new baby will do that.

As this issue has continued to be a thorn in my side I have been slowly over time been trying to do a couple of things that we had talked about for further testing.

First, I have created a completely new virtual machine of Windows 7 with a new installation of the current release of Plex Meda Server v1.13.2.5154 that is a blank slate / it knows absolutely nothing of my other main database that we have been discussing. I logged into Plex with a long unused, but still active account that I made for my wife when we first started dating so I could share media with her at her then separate residence so my Plex account is not associated either. The only thing the same is that I copied over 4 folders from my The Beatles and the entire KISS music folder onto this virtual machine’s hard drive as these two artists have been regular examples of this problem that I have used. No other media is present or has ever been introduced into this database. I am using the Personal Media Artists agent in a Basic Music Library.

There are only 4 Beatles album present - no duplicates! … which should be in the following order.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band [Mono] [1967-05-26]
Magical Mystery Tour [Mono] [1967-11-27]
Yellow Submarine [2009 Stereo Remaster] [1969-01-17]
Abbey Road [2009 Stereo Remaster] [1969-09-26]

… but lo and behold the sorting problem persists when sorting by ‘Oldest First’ …

Additionally, if I re-order by Newest First as you had shown me that you do with a screenshot of your Beatles library earlier in the conversation I get this.

which is correct which led me to believe that the problem is isolated to the Oldest First setting. I then changed my KISS library to Newest First and I believe all albums are correctly sorted. Again however, Oldest First is wrong with this artist as well in my original, Main library along with this new installation of Plex.

If I could impose upon you ever so slightly. Would you please take the exact same screenshot you did before of your Beatles Artist library, but set only that library to sort by Oldest First so we can compare? If your dates are the same as mine and the problem persists your Sgt. Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour albums will be in the wrong order.

I can change the sorting order to whichever I like. My albums will follow suit.

Our libraries have an major difference: I use a Premium Music library.
You are using Personal Media.
I wonder if that is the key.

I am using a basic library on this new server only because I have no choice. I presume I can’t set up two separate servers with the same Plex Pass account and as frustrating as this all is I’m not going to pay $150 to purchase another pass (not that Plex wouldn’t have earned it admittedly). I really don’t want to even dislodge let alone erase my main library due to all of my custom changes I’ve made over the years.

The outcome between my basic and premium library is identical and you’ve seen my dates are correct and yet the sorting is wrong in both instances ONLY when sorting by Oldest First. Should something so basic as date sorting be all that different between the basic and premium libraries? There are no additional fields in the Edit window for an album that would suggest a defining difference between the two.

Are you saying that my using Personal Media agent may be the key? What should I be using versus that? Again, unless there is something going on under the hood, I don’t understand how the dates can be as such both in Plex and in the file tags themselves and then be ordered so obviously wrong and now on a completely clean database. It just makes no logical sense from the information I have available to me in Plex itself between both server instances.

I would still love to see (please o:) ) your Beatles albums ordered from Oldest First along with the Edit windows for just Sgt. Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour so I can see the dates you have because this makes no sense and now that I’ve done this from a completely blank slate server and library database I can’t believe this is an isolated incident. I’m just not that unlucky.

Of course you can. There is no server limit on the plex pass.

While preparing the screenshots, I discovered that this must have been regressed.
So I will file a new bug report.

@OttoKerner Thank you so much for sticking with me and changing your sort order to see what I’ve been experiencing since the change from the old registry entry controlling album sort order to the current implementation.

I hope you didn’t feel like I was trying to paint you into a corner with the screenshot request, but after all the overwhelming evidence I felt like I had it seemed like the final move I could make so you could see with your own eyes the problem I’ve been having.

Thank goodness The Beatles are so popular because without them as a common example I’m not sure I would have been able to adequately pinpoint such a precise example across both our libraries.

Super excited to hopefully have this fixed in an upcoming release.

Of course you can. There is no server limit on the plex pass.

Really??? I would have never thought that to be the case. I just presumed that one Plex Pass equaled one server. Honestly, I spend enough time trying to manage the one I have I wouldn’t even want to have more than one, but good to know.

Technically speaking, the Plex Pass is applied to your plex.tv account.
Every server and/or client you sign in to this account can benefit from the Plex Pass.

@OttoKerner - I am totally trying to not be impatient especially since I have no control whatsoever, but I wanted to ask if a bug ID / number had been assigned to this issue that I could track or just keep an eye out for whenever a new server release comes out? So far the problem continues to persist. Do I need to send someone some :taco:s?

This bug is still open, but has been postponed.
