Album tagging

I can see this as been discussed a little already but most the post seem to just drop dead midway with no really proper answers.

So i am asking again, what is the correct tagging for Compliation albums.

Now i use the most popular one Now thats what i call music NN (nn being incremental number)

eg… Now 58 contains 2 cds

What should the tags be for the this…

currently i have

Artist = being the song artist,
Album Album = Various Artists
Album = Now 58
Discnumber = 1 for all tracks on cd1 and 2 for all tracks on cd2

when i look in plex filtered by ALL / Album / By Album Artist

I can see NOW 58 and Now 59 displayed with the text Various Artist first and Now 58/59) under each cover art.

if i go in to Now 58, i see 42 tracks listed as tracks 1-20 and then 1-22… but they are not split as in some screenshots
eg DISK 1, then 1-20 tracks, followed by DISK 2, and tracks 1-22.

This is via the Plex Web (ie on my desktop PC)

However via the Andriod app it does correctly show DISK 1 / DISK 2 split when listing the 42 tracks… is that a BUG in the WEB view?

now my other question is when i change the filter to ALL / Artists

I see artists names, but those artists that are in the say NOW 58 tracks are not listed… however there is a VARIOUS ARTIST box instead
and clicking inside this shows NOW 58/59 Album and then its back to full album view list

I was hoping it would in this view be a Group for each artist, so i could click on Elton John and i would expect to see all albums by Elton and then each Complication albums as well (even if thats just 1 track)

How would i get that done? or is it even possible.

sorry the above is very wordy… thanks.

You did tag everything correctly.

The missing ‘disc number’ in the web app is a bug which will be corrected in one of the next releases.

It is unfortunately not possible to have an Artist category for every single artist from a ‘compilation’ album.
Only ‘real’ Album Artists are listed in Plex.

Phew  it took a few goes but want sure which way was really correct.

I was getting paranoid, as screenshot from older posts showed the Disk number split, so guess this got broken
at somepoint?

ok so it using tag from ALBUM ARTIST for the all Artist view and not the Artist tag?
what if i make Artist (=Various Artist) and Album Artist the actual person (will have to give that a test)

one addition question.

When i go into a Artist Group. and it lists all there albums… it seems to show most recent albums first… cant see anyway to change that order?

Yes, when the web app was updated from v2.x to v3.x

ok so it using tag from ALBUM ARTIST for the all Artist view and not the Artist tag?

correct

Then your compilation album will get ‘split up’ into many albums of the same name, each one under a different Album Artist

one addition question.

This is the default sorting order.
You can change the default for the music library as a whole
and you can also override the library default for each individual AlbumArtist

edit the library
or
edit the AlbumArtist
go to the ‘Advanced’ tab and set the ‘Album order’

Nope.
You probably first used the bundled web app that came with your server
and you have now loaded the ‘hosted’ web app from http://plex.tv/web
which is a newer release and contains the fix already.

perfect… that was exactly it… silly though as the local server version was only just updated to 1.10.xx

thanks again…

The ‘server’ team and the ‘web app’ team don’t wait for each other when they are releasing new versions.
When there is a ‘server’ version in testing (which takes several days), it doesn’t get changed anymore. If the web app team has a new release during that time, it won’t get into this server release.
