Allow sync without transcoding

+1 I really would like to have this feature !

Not sure why, but HD mkv files from a Blue ray seems to fly across (minutes) on sync however SD mkv files from a DVD using the same setting as the with HD seem to require transcoding. Moving to MKV as a container has speeded the process up as mp4 took 5 or 6 hours - now its a couple max.

There are two audio tracks, one stereo and one AC3 5.1 and for my tablet I only pick stereo for sync which shouldn’t need anything doing to it!

I select the original as quality as I know the media has been encoded so it doesn’t need anything do to it to play on all my devices but the NAS is still doing something when syncing a SD file - no idea what!

What would be ideal is if you select the original it sync’s everything, lock, stock and barrel - no stripping out audio tracks or subtitles as that has caught me out before when I have come to watch a film and not realised I hadn’t selected the subtitle track to also sync.

Part the issue is to do with subtitles - I think!

If I select a HD movie without them, boom its packaged up and sent over in minutes; if I pick a track to go with the sync then the NAS is reporting a 4 to 6 hour conversion. I know the tablet and phone can play subtitle PSG and VOBtiles without needing any transcoding as they play happily without any CPU load when streaming over the network so why transcode them for a sync?

Am I missing something? #confused.com

Pretty silly that you can’t control the streams, or set it to simply copy all streams/the original file. Even if you were trying to dictate 1 video, 1 audio, 1 sub stream, you should just mux together the appropriate streams and go from there, not convert the entire thing.

It’s an option people have been requesting since I signed up for plex well over a year ago and although sync has gotten better recently
apart from its current issues that is! But the simple copy function seems to being ignored.

I only have a NAS running Plex and although is a clever beast it’s not overly powerful so I encode all our media at source to be compatible with all our devices without the need for NAS to do anything.

Did Plex ever comment on this thread?

Is there a work around for music, or do I have to keep transcoding mp3 to mp3?

The mp3 to mp3 alters the bit rate I.e 256kbs to 160kbs to reduce file size on the mobile device. You can change this and if it matches the media source it’s not converted
I believe!

What quality setting did you use? The highest possible is 320 kbps. If you have an MP3 greater than 320 kbps, that’s a problem. MP3’s should not be encoded above 320. All other MP3’s should sync as-is.

I’m sorry to bump this old thread but i can’t seem to figure out a way to sync without transcoding for my .mkv files.
Apps like Infuse has it but yet not Plex. Just took the pass to enjoy such a feature but i’m a bit disappointed so far.
My NAS can’t really handle transcoding so i would like to be able to download directly the untouched media

Updated the latest PMS and sync seems to be back up and working without issue - so far its pushed out 4 films, 3 HD and 1 SD without issue however it still insists on converting stuff even when selecting original meaning no subtitles unless I remember to pick a track and then the process takes forever to convert.

This converting file is really a problem. Fastest way to get a movie synced on my iPhone is to bought it directly on iTunes. Such a big shame that plex can’t copy over the fly our media.

Summer 2017 and Plex still can’t direct copy sync, but forces a transcode of content that plays natively. WHY?

+1 - you be handy to get all the information in a film - like subtitles!

+1. The majority of my library is HVEC, which keeps the file sizes down. After transcoding and transferring to my android, the sync’d version can be double or triple the size of the original file. I could just copy the original files to my phone and play them locally without Plex and save space.

+1, this really sucks! the ipad can play mp4, hevc, mkv etc. directly, so please make it possible to sync without hours of transcoding

Just paid for PlexPass so i can sync my media collection to my mobile device before leaving the house for the day, only to find out it wants to transcode the media?

Why? Absolutely stupid. I’ve been telling people Plex is the best thing they simply have to have as a media collector, and this is absolutely the stupidest feature requirement i can possibly think off.

Add a feature to copy the media object to the local device storage in its server side format. I thought that’s what i was paying for, not paying to have a transcode kick off from my tiny CPU NAS and then have to wait 90 minutes to get a crappier copy of what i have already transcoded to my wants, needs and desires.

Add this feature as a matter of priority or you’ll have paying customers telling soon to be paying customers to look at other options.

So glad i didn’t pay for a life time subscription, want my money back on the yearly subscription.

Would be great if it could be enabled +1

Is it normal that I use infuse in order to have this feature ? To me no

Due to my limited power on my NAS I have created 720p versions of the most of the 1080p content so remote users without the bandwidth or download speed can still access content etc.

I decided I wanted to sync some of the films onto my tablet but there is no option to selection which version to sync - selecting ‘Original’ downloads the 1080p version and it a pick a lower resolution which best matched the 720p version PMS starts to transcode the 1080p version rather than pushing out the already created 720p version.

I don’t really need 1080p on a 8" tablet - the 720p is fine and much smaller in file size:

**Am I missing something or is there away to selection which version is sync’d to a device? **

UPDATE - It’s not possible at the moment, PMS will always default to the best quality first and there is no option for picking a lower quality.
