Allow sync without transcoding

As mentioned before, the current implementation of Mobile Sync does not take into account a specific device’s capabilities. It uses a generic profile to check if a file can be direct played or not. We are hoping to account for the device’s capabilities in the next implementation of the feature.

For example, devices are starting to support HEVC, but no HEVC content can be synced without transcoding now.

Any updates on this? It’s a bit silly and absurd that Infuse now supports turn-key Plex sign-in and direct sync as requested here, but for some reason this feature can’t be sorted within the Official Plex app.

This should really be done, because all my files are using HEVC and all my devices support it. It would be great, because the files are much smaller and it’s ideal for phone. Because of this I never use mobile sync.

Still in the works. Keep in mind that a change to the sync feature not only affects the Android App, but also the iOS app, Plex Media Server, and Cloud Sync. This is not a trivial change.

I have no idea what the infuse app does. Most likely just a direct file copy. This is not the same as Mobile Sync and probably does not contain the Sync part with PMS.

Thanks for the update.

Any news on this?

The only reason I bought a plex pass was to be able to synch to my ios device. If I have to wait hours for transcoding for that, I’m just going to cancel it.

Do not rush yourselves, we know it’s been 5 years of hard work on the fix (by fix I mean, the whole Sync feature raison d’être) :rage:

+1 sync without transcoding. PMS even does this for MP3s on my iPhone. I’m at a loss as to why you can’t just let me copy over the original, especially for audio formats like MP3. If it fails to play, then it fails to play. Ultimately you either have to keep correct profiles for every single device (seems very likely to fail) or just give me an option to copy the original no matter what. It eventually comes down to the fact that there are more device configurations in the world than Plex has dev hours. And that’s OK. Accept that and fix the problem.

+1 sync without transcoding!

+1, sync without transcoding!
Please, at least give us a quick fix, with a disclaimer or whatever, that allows a “file-as-is copy”-sync, until you have your perfect solution figured out… Do it for e.g MP3s to begin with, should be harmless, but would at least show that you’re finally on the issue, and a major one according to a lot of us! Thanks!

+1 for mobile sync. I got an iPad Pro intending to play HEVC media with it, and I’m pretty disappointed my paid Plex Pass subscription doesn’t let me sync my HEVC media directly without a transcode.

Every video in my library is NVENC encoded MP4s. They all direct stream fine, why can’t I sync them directly too? Apps like Infuse or VLC can play them fine.

+1 sync without transcoding!!!
DEVELOPER ANDROID APP pls go to work!!!

Yes also want this. Syncing content with conversion is painful and a waste of time and processing power. And this is for iOS the same as Android (noticed a little late that this was in the Android part of the forum).

+1 sync without transcoding
I bought a lifetime pass only for the sync function. I run PMS on an Intel Atom-based NAS and transcoding takes forever; my Kindle Fire HD is perfectly capable of direct playing anything on my server. When I found out that there wasn’t a simple copy going on but a transcode process, I regretted buying the Plex Pass. I know, I could have tried it first with the monthly subscription, but the fact that the sync function was meant to transcode everything even when not needed, really didn’t cross my mind.
Please fix this, make the Plex Pass worth buying.

This thread that originated in 2013 appears to confirm that there is no way to quickly sync files and bypass transcoding. That is a major bummer! One of the best use cases for sync is when the car is packed for a long road trip and a Plex Pass Life Time membership user is trying to quickly load movies on a tablet. Is there some legal or regulatory reason that the software won’t support this simple feature?

Oh my god have mercy… Why can I not get my money back? I actually PAID for this ■■■■? Correction, lifetime was gifted to me and if I had known a feature this simple that any mouth breathing basement dweller could do hasn’t been implemented LITERALLY almost 6 years later I would have immediately asked for the person who gifted it to me to refund their purchase immediately.

This is a JOKE and all PLEX staff should be shamed at themselves. Good god, have some pride in your work!

Been looking at how Emby has been growing over the past year. It seems it will go further than Plex did. It is sad that when a project starts growing the developers turn their attention to the money and not the community that made them grow, which eventually ends in projects just dying. I suppose it was a good run, though.

I feel this is not acceptable. Many of us keep the library optimised, but yet Plex is trying to reconvert. This should be fixed ASAP.

This is such a basic request client side under both IOS and Android platforms. Such a shame that is has been neglected in the same way proper parental controls have been.
