Do I have to read the complete thread to answer? Well. I didn't. :-D
With the risk of being wrong... Why don't we see any DNS forwards/intercepts in the logs?

Ok. So now I think as well, that you have a certificate issue.
Do you see those certs on your aTV (Profiles)? If yes, remove all of them and create and install it fresh.
One thing I stumbled across earlier was, that the certificate was created with a different user than PlexConnect was running under. Not sure, but that seems to create issues.
Use the network method to install it... gives a lot less trouble as far as I can tell.
PS: The KEY file is some intermediate file, used during the cert creation process and merged into the PEM file(?). You can keep it, you can delete it... it shouldn't make a difference.

Ahhhh... good point and will do next time!

Thanks for the feedback. I had actually deleted and re-created the certificates and installed a second time and still seeing the issue.
Trying to get the certs installed via the Network is like trying to get blood out of a stone!!!! - I tried 20 times to get it installed via the network (as you will see from the beginning of this thread) but could not succeed. Hence, I moved to the direct USB based option via the Apple Configurator...
I don't believe the user account I used to create the certs is different to the account I used to start up PlexConnect. Is there a way I can check this within the cert? I still have a horrible feeling this may be related to ports... unless the log information I provided earlier suggests otherwise...
If you cant load certs via network there is a good chance there is a different underlining issue preventing plexconnect from working. Get your cert loaded via network first and go from there. If you cant here is a good chance something is not allowing plexconnect to operate properly with your os/network. Can you try a different device/os temporarily to rule out the current device/os.
>>I don't believe the user account I used to create the certs is different to the account I used to start up PlexConnect.
Well, PlexConnect needs the "sudo", which will lift it away from the user account.
The thing that solved it for me was to grant ownership to the files to the root. the way tutorial is described, files are created and owned by the logged user, not root.
So, after adding the three files to the assets/certificates folder I ran:
sudo chown -R root:root /path/to/your/PlesConnectInstall/
this will change the owner of all files to root.
It worked for me on Ubuntu 14.04.3, should be soemthing similar Mac, I assume
Guys, i’m having the exact same problem!
I’ve been running Plex on ATV2 4.4.4 for many years now.
Today I upgraded the firmware to 5.3 (with Seas0nPass), and i’m desperately trying to get PlexConnect working.
I’m trying to add the profile on my ATV2 and it eventually times out with error -1001.
Unable to add profile.
An error occurred while adding the profile [-1001]. Check the URL and try again.
I’ve spend a very long time on this.
My Windows PC is a static IP, 192.168.1.3.
ipconfig:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.3(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 235430502
DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-1C-66-A1-2
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
On my ATV2 I set the DNS to manual and set it to my Windows IP: 192.168.1.3
I’ve tried running PlexConnect.py as a process as well as a service, it’s just not logging!
Here’s my Settings.cfg, i’ve played around with a lot of the settings trying to get it working:
[PlexConnect]
enable_plexgdm = True
ip_pms = 192.168.1.3
port_pms = 32400
enable_dnsserver = True
port_dnsserver = 53
ip_dnsmaster = 192.168.1.3
prevent_atv_update = True
enable_plexconnect_autodetect = True
ip_plexconnect = 192.168.1.3
hosttointercept = trailers.apple.com
port_webserver = 80
enable_webserver_ssl = True
port_ssl = 443
certfile = ./assets/certificates/trailers.pem
allow_gzip_atv = False
allow_gzip_pmslocal = False
allow_gzip_pmsremote = True
loglevel = High
logpath = .
I tried adding the profile: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer
and i’ve also tried my IP instead of the name. Still takes forever trying to add it, then times out with -1001 error.
There’s no entries in my Windows hosts file, and I have not done any port forwarding on my Router.
The router shows I have a static IP.
I am not running anything like Web Server etc.
My certificates are definitely ok, I double checked.
Directory of D:\PlexConnect-master\assets\certificates
26/12/2016 11:04 AM .
26/12/2016 11:04 AM …
27/06/2016 09:00 AM 921 certificates.txt
26/12/2016 10:34 AM 814 trailers.cer
26/12/2016 10:34 AM 2,910 trailers.pem
Any help would greatly be appreciated! I’m concerned i’m not getting any logging, that would lead me to believe there’s a network related issue, the request from ATV2 whilst adding the profile is not reaching my PlexConnect.py?
PS: I looked into the alternative option of copying via USB. iPhone Configuration Utility is no longer supported, but I did find the version listed on the website, however it gave me an error about Apple Mobile Device Support not found, which I do have installed with iTunes.

Additional information:
When I have my ATV2 network DNS set to my Windows IP, it only has “Computers” and “Settings” listed on the main screen. Plus it can’t set the date and time, I have to press a button on the remote to skip past that.
When I change the DNS back to what it used to be (192.168.1.1, the Router IP), I can see all the other icons on the main screen such as WSJ, NetFlix etc.

Hello All,I am new to PlexConnect and am trying to get it working with my ATV3 but for some reason, it just loops at the very end when trying to add the certificate profile. I have copied the two files as instructed but still have the trailers.key file on the desktop - I didn’t see any instructions on where to place this remaining file.
I have PlexServer running on my Mac Pro which is on Mavericks 10.9.2. I am using Python 2.7.5 on my OSX Mavericks build and as reported from the terminal window when I launch PlexConnect. I have made the DNS entry on the Apple TV the same as the IP which my Mac Pro is configured on running the server software - which happens to be a manually set static-ip address. I believe have followed everything to the ‘T’ as per the instructions but for some reason, I just can’t get the profile added which I assume is the very last step.
Any ideas/suggestions on where I should be looking next…? I appreciate any help/advice in advance…
Cheers,
Vin.
Hey VinBob, I had the same problem as you and I just solved it!
The problem for me was I had my private Windows Firewall turned on. I turned it off while I was trying to add the certificate/profile, and it just went through immediately. Everything is working now, but as soon as I turn the private Windows Firewall back on, everything stops working. I’ll need to solve how to get it working together, but it’s a step forward!
