I have a server in my basement, has all my media on it. It was setup years ago with OMV. I followed some instructions long ago to setup plex server on it, and it kept blowing up time and time again, because plex is the most unstable thing I’ve ever had the misfortune of using. Some time ago someone on the forums here helped me clean some things up and set it up to something working, and it worked great for a while.
But today I go to sign into plex after a while of not using it - and my server and content is not there. No option to add it. No trace of it. No errors. It’s just GONE!
But my library of content still exists on the file shares on my server.
Why has plex decided to completely ignore my library and not allow me to access it?
Where the hell is my plex server?
What gives?
I just want SOMETHING THAT WORKS!!!
Is that such an unreasonable request?
For the love of almighty - just make a version of plex that @#$^@$#%@$#ING WORKS!!!
When I click on the “your media” link, all it does is give me a link to download an installer for plex server.
How does this make sense FOR SOMEONE THAT HAS A SERVER SETUP ALREADY!?!?!?!
NO SIGN AT ALL THAT I PREVIOUSLY HAD A SERVER THAT I NEVER REMOVED, NO OPTION TO READD IT, NO OPTION TO ADD MEDIA AT ALL - JUST A LINK FOR AN INSTALLER, WHICH I CAN DO NOTHING WITH, BEACAUSE EVEN IF I NEEDED TO USE IT, I HAVE NO OPTION TO ACTUALLY ADD ANYTHING!!!
I must point out yet again how completely and utterly non-intuitive the design of plex is. I would have hoped by now the dev team would have figured out ways to actually come up with an intuitive design.
I’ve had to go back and re-run commands shared with me years ago to reclaim my server. Once I did that - boom - content is back. HOWEVER…now all of my data as to what I’ve watched and not watched IS GONE!!!
WHERE IS THAT DATA!?!?!?!?!?
PLEX ALWAYS LOSES THAT DATA FOR ME EVERY #&%^#$%^ING TIME SOMETHING GOES WRONG, EVEN WHEN PEOPLE HELP ME “MIGRATE” THAT DATA!!!
I AM ^%%@#$%ING SICK AND TIRED OF PLEX LOSING MY BASIC DATA, AND HAVING NO METHOD OF ORGANIZING THINGS PROPERLY!!!
CAN PLEX FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP LOSING MY VIEWING DATA!?!?!?!?!?
If you are really that upset by the way Plex operates then the solution is simple:
Rather than whining about the issues you might just use one of the other media managers out there. There is:
Jellyfin
Emby
Kodi
CH-DVR - They have an import function that, mostly, works for local media.
PlayOn - I think they are still in operation.
and many others.
Personally there is a lot about Plex that I do not like and a lot I do but i find that, most of the time, problems are actually the “fault” of users doing things that Plex was not designed for.
With the problems you describe I would look at how your setup differs from what Plex expects and try to fix those differences.
BTW: If you want help include your logs and try to be a lot less vague about what is happening.
I’ve asked several times in the past what plex expects - I do not try to have convoluted setups, I’ve carefully followed instructions. But it always breaks down.
I really don’t care what I use, so long as it actually works! At this point, I’d be happy to never hear the word plex again so long as I live for the amount of trouble it has created in what should really be so simple.
I’d happily share logs, but I have no idea what/where to share.
I’ve tried Kodi before - seems more like a half assed player that doesn’t manage anything properly at all, and can’t even do the simple task of passing thru multichannel flac data to my receiver to properly play it back, and instead insists on transcoding everything. Even spent some hours in chat with a developer, only for him to blame my fire cube. Really don’t care who’s to blame, but finger pointing is bullshit! And even when I did get Kodi to work - it would crash halfway into the 2nd song of an album. Every! Damn! Time! No one could ever make it work on anything I tried to use it on. Kodi is banned from this house!
