Anybody using RAMDISK with success?

I would like to hear if going through the trouble of setting up a RAMDISK is worth it for Plex. I am looking at improving seeking times of live tv/recorded content, maybe even how fast the interface renders etc.

In general I have an i5-powered laptop running my plex server with 8GB of RAM and eSATA storage for the recorded content. I should say that I first record on the internal drive and then nightly I move the content to external storage. I watch through a Shield TV (hardwired CAT6) and an LG TV over Wifi. Overall I can’t complain too much as I don’t get any buffering etc, but seeking can definitely stand to improve (sometimes 1 second delay, most often 3-4 sec delay and at the very worst 7 sec delay, but no matter what audio always cuts off). Oh, and I also transcode everything to h264 nightly so I mostly watch content that is DirectPlay-ed.

thoughts?

I run my transcoder on an 24GB ramdisk … no complaints here

you just have to have a script that creates it before plex starts

I do not think that you really will gain anything much by using a ram disk for transcoding or much of anything else by using a ramdisk with Plex. Disk access is not generally a bottleneck when using Plex. Video processing is not a disk intensive so the gain in performance would be minimal.
