So your model of ATV?
I believe it’s the 3rd gen 4k
I have this issue as well, 1080P non HDR having sttuters.
Does the earlier build work for you? If we can localise the change now, in 2 years they might fix it like last time we pointed out the exact build the issue started. EDIT OK that was snarky, it was only one year ![]()
i have the newest ATV 4k+ and would like to join the beta group, if possible.
thank you!
After reading these comments about stutter with (9470) build, I started to watch a number 1080p Titles carefully. I must say I can notice this stutter appear briefly (10-20 seconds), yet it seems to sort it self out but it can at times revisit. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a regression from (9420). ![]()
I watched a 1080p HEVC, 5.1 EAC3, PGS subtitled movie with my partner on build 9470 last night, on my Apple TV 4K (1st generation). The stutter seems to appear in any scene with a significant amount of motion. There’s no impact to audio - I believe it’s just dropping frames.
I suspect that when there is a spike in bitrate (due to how variable bitrate works for scenes with more movements vs. scenes with less movement), the stuttering becomes evident. As soon as the motion slows down, the frame drops disappear and the video is smooth again.
Downgrading to build 9420 solves this issue, but brings back issues with subtitles (particularly the font size - it’s HUGE on some movies!)
Upon first testing when only looking for subtitles changes I did not notice the increase in stutter, but as I was using it regularly I definitely saw it come and go.
As someone mentioned, it seems to be worse with certain scenes, and not noticeable with others.
Came looking for other reports, its nice to see so many others reporting this issue so I know its not my setup. I have mainly 4K HDR DV movies and TV shows and using the New Player makes them unusable, stutter is quite bad. Im going to try the cooling solution and see if that’s indeed the issue. I don’t like transcoding HDR content as HDR transcoding is still wonky, it works well until it doesn’t.
I haven’t used subtitles on anything lately so I didn’t notice that issue!
The client is not doing any refresh rate switching. The Apple TV is set to match framerate on 50hz, when I play 60hz files, the refresh rate doesn’t switch. This does work in other apps like Emby player for example …
Anyone else notice at times when selecting something to play; a movie, TV show, or Live TV & DVR via a tuner(Cablecard) that it loads to what appears to be a paused state and the only way to play is to hit the ‘skip forward’ button? This is not happening every time, but I’d say it is about 40-50% of the time. I’ve tried to roll back to quite a few older builds and it still occurs.
Yes. This happens quite often. Even on build 9420. Not every time but very often when I start something it’s just a black screen until I fiddle with play/pause or skip forward.
Odd, have not experienced this issue.
I have Experienced at times it can take a few seconds say 5 or so for a show to start but not all the time. (Black screen)

Yep, this happens to me on build 9420 and 9470!
Yeah definitely have had this happen at times. I also recall it happening with the normal mpv player.
Yes, this started in the latest build (9573) also for me.
Anyone getting better frame rate and less stuttering while using the old audio engine with the most recent playback beta?
Given the announcement of the new Plex experience - and the fact that its codebase has been rebuilt from the ground up - I am curious how this relates to the current Plex beta on tvOS. Is this now a stopgap until the new Plex app launches on tvOS? It’s pretty great on iOS so far!
I’m curious also, especially considering there were already 2(?) players being worked here.
Hard to say what “experience” uses, as it doesn’t seem to have the frame stutter the current beta does for me, and doesn’t share playback controls, double-tap to zoom, etc.
