Thanks for finally adding this (maybe I can close my almost three year old post: [Recommendation] Develop a Video Player for the Apple TV 4 (tvOS)). I’m pretty excited about this, especially when the HDR support is added so I won’t need to use other apps to playback my Plex media. A few feedback points right now:
No 10 second jump forward or backward with the Siri remote.
When using my Harmony remotes if I pause I can’t start it playing again unless I used the Siri remote to scrub forward or back and click after scrubbing.
When using the Harmony remote there’s no way to fast forward or rewind.
It says it’s direct playing DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio but I’m only getting 5 channel so I’m guessing I’m only getting the DTS core?
For audio I don’t see anything in the post where you’re planning on direct playing TrueHD 7.1 or DTS-HD MA 7.1 similar to how it’s done in MrMC or Infuse. Is that in the works? Without that you’re still leaving a big gap.
1, 2 and 3 are things we’re working on right now (like, right now ). We wanted to have that in today’s beta but it was impossible, we left it out in the very last minute. Surprisingly, it’s a real pain to handle remote control events reliably in tvOS We hope we have something soon!
4 is correct, only DTS core
AFAIK 5 is more about paying licenses to support those audio formats. We’re discussing about it internally, but we haven’t taken a decision. Can’t promise anything at this point other than what we have, sorry!
With this new foundation we’ll have the ability to improve our format support and will be considering things like this for future improvements. For now, let us know if you encounter any formats where the new player provides a worse experience that the old player!
You can’t download a subtitle while playing a video in the Apple TV Plex app (you can do it by stopping the movie and using the “More” subtitle function, but that’s not very efficient).
Sure thing. Should get a chance to do that over the weekend, maybe on Sunday. For what it’s worth now, they were audio tracks that are ripped using MakeMKV (no encoding done) and I believe Criterion uses 24bit Linear PCM Mono or Stereo tracks for the older titles. Should have more to share soon!
