Apple TV Plex app: "New" media player will not play any videos, just shows black screen with spinning wheel. "Old" player works

Server Version#: 1.23.6.4810
Player Version#: 7.20 (422)

  • All on local network.
  • Tried two Apple TVs (the 2021 4k models); both are hard wired, and both play media in other apps without issue.
  • Local streaming set to maximum.
  • Direct play is on.
  • using “experimental” media players.
  • video formats tried: 1080p h264 mkv and mp4.

Tried updating PMS and Apple TV app, as well as rebooting everything, but no luck. PMS is on unraid, docker container if it matters.

edit:

just tried changing to the “old” media player and now it plays mp4 files again. Direct plays perfectly. Not sure about mkv yet. I’ll see if I can get client app logs.

The “new” player hasn’t been “experimental” for quite some time and appears to be working find under most circumstances – it should be working great with coming h264 1080p videos in MKV/MP4 containers.

Do you experience this issue with all media or only certain files?

right, I just didn’t know what else to call it. It was working great until we came home from vacation yesterday. Even videos that played fine last week now do not work. It appears to be all media.

Can you please disable the old player again, reproduce your issue and then collect your client’s logs to upload them here? I’m not using 6-channel AAC but otherwise I have dozens of files like this that are playing just fine… so nothing obvious jumping to my eye.

Now everything seems to be working normally again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Hopefully it won’t come back but if it does I’ll do that.

Have been experiencing this same issue, but unfortunately neither combinations of use old player or disabling direct play can get playback working

Oddly enough, if you try to change quality after launching the video, and change to “convert automatically” it ends up working. Strange given that you can disable direct play, start a show, and it’s still trying to direct play, and only plays when you change the quality

Seeing the very same issue with some of my videos when the Apple TV Plex App is set to Play Original Quality. As soon as I change the quality to something else, and pause/resume, the video plays fine on the Apple TV Plex App. Doesn’t matter whether Direct Play is on or off.

Funny thing is that the videos play fine in the Plex web and macOS desktop app.

Pulled logs and doing more troubleshooting…the video plays fine on another Apple TV 4K (same model, same OS, same Plex version) as the the one that is not working. The only difference is that the TV is 4K HDR capable. Gonna delete the Plex app and reinstall on the non-working setup with the 1080p TV.

Removed and reinstalled the Plex app on the affected Apple TV and the problem went away. Odd…maybe something with the configuration was damaged/corrupted?
