Apple TV transcoding film when it shouldn't be.

My Apple TV 4 running the latest everything seems to be transcoding some 1080p films but as far as i know, it really shouldn’t be.

Audio is AC3 video is h.264 in a m4v container and subtitles are off.

I cannot see any reason for this to be transcoded and yet it is and it’s pausing frequently as the server seems to be unable to transcode quickly enough.

Not had this issue before with my Apple TV so bit odd that it is starting now.

Any idea why this might happen? Anything i can do?

h.264 is not h.264
there are more parameters like ‘color bit depth’ and # of ‘reference frames’ which could trigger transcoding.

Please post the mediainfo XML of the offending file and you’ll very likely get a definitive answer why.

Hi @OttoKerner ,

Thanks for the reply!

I have attached the xml, i’ll be interested to know what anyone can tell me!

Thanks

to be allowed to attach it, you need to zip it first.

codecID=“hevc”

I would suspect this has something to do with it.

@OttoKerner I managed to attach it in the end as a .txt file!

@MovieFan.Plex But i can play the file on my Appletv using the Appletv VLC app just fine. So don’t understand why Plex can’t play it?

Plex uses the built in Apple TV player, which is limited to only the media types apple allows. VLC uses a custom player that is able to play back media that the default apple tv player does not support.
