AppleTV not connecting to internet

Dear all,

It's not a specific PlexConnect question (but Plex is the reason I bought an Apple TV so here goes.)

I looked for answers on the apple forums but without success, so I thought I would try it here.

I have an AppleTV 2, which is now to the latest software, it only shows computers & settings and can't connect to the internet. It is connected to the network and I can Airplay to it without a problem.

Many people suggested it would be a router-related problem but with my AppleTV 3 on the same network I have no problems. Also brought the AppleTV 2 to work to try on another network and there it doesn't work as well.

I have reset, as well as did a full restore in iTunes and the problem persists.

I tried playing around with DNS settings on the router, as well as resetting it, all without success.

I realize it is a more Apple-related problem than a Plex problem, but would sincerely appreciate any help you guys could give me. Now the AppleTV is pretty much useless.

Thanks in advance,

Doesn’t sound good. If you did a full restore on the latest ios revision and cannot connect with wifi or ethernet just plainly trying to use it without plexconnect at the moment you might have a nice atv2 paperweight. Did you do a dfu restore?

If you can AirPlay to it then is is connected to your LAN network, it seems that it is having issues connecting to the outside world.

I would suggest taking it to a friends and testing on their network as it would appear to be router related (maybe some weird port forwarding or DNS boa holing you have set up) and this would confirm it.

Thanks for your answers, unfortunately still not resolved.

Tried it at other networks, still same problem. Even brought another AppleTV to my network, which works perfectly.

Very strange...

As Walhman asked do you get the same problem on both wifi and hard wired and did you put it in DFU mode to restore, rather than just using iTunes?

Have you told your Apple TV to forget the network that it is currently on, and then reconnect that same network?

$300 paperweight…ouch, thats my guess. :frowning:

I have had issues with this - Apple TV losing internet connection for its other services etc. and once I learnt that you can airplay 5.1 from the Plex app on ios, then I have gone back to just using that, as it works..

I have put DNS back to AUTO etc.

I suggest you do this and see what happens:

I have combined @computersteve’s, baa’s, and my own modifed plexconnect.deb (automatic plexconnect installation method) to get plexconnect installed on the atv2. I also figured out how to get python properly installed on the atv. Restore your atv to ios 5.3 jb with seasonpass and install nitoTV then follow this guide exactly. If it doesn’t work after you are done download the setting.cfg from your atv2 (located at /Applications/PlexConnect) to your computer and choose plexgdm=true but ONLY if it doesnt work then reupload it to your atv and reboot/restart (power cycle) your atv. You must sign into myplex for the tabs to populate content on first run. Plex client does not work on ios 5.x+ only 4.x. Plexconnect is an alternative Plex client script that does work on ios 5.x+.

Follow these easy terminal commands after you sftp over all the desired .debs from here https://www.dropbox…iog2/Z648L43AZN to your atv2 (filezilla). I have installed this on multiple atv2’s and so have others, set your dns to auto not manual. This automates nearly the entire aTV plexconnect installation for you. ssh into atv after you copied over the files and enter these commands after your navigated to the folder where you placed them (nitoTV is the easiest way to install openssh for ssh access):

rm -f ~/.ssh/known_hosts

echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade

apt-get install git

dpkg -i sqlite3_3.5.9-12_iphoneos-arm.deb

dpkg -i sqlite3-lib_3.5.9-2_iphoneos-arm.deb

dpkg -i python_2.7.3-3_iphoneos-arm.deb

dpkg -i autoupdate.deb

dpkg -i plexconnect.deb

##once complete the aTV will reboot and you will have a new plexconnect button. Just sign into myplex and you should be all set.

##Optional log back in to your atv via ssh after your atv reboots and type this if you want more apps by spoofing your iOS version to a higher IOS after navigating to the spoof.deb location:

dpkg -i spoof.deb

Hopefuly the autoupdate plist works if not you can manually update by typing this into a terminal window after you ssh into your atv:

update.bash

Thanks all for your help.

@foob4r; yes both via ethernet and wireless.

@GeoffKennedy; Yes did it, problem persists.

@Wahlman.j Thanks for this tip, will try to do it after work tonight.

Which is now very weird, another way I tried to update and restore the device was by going to settings > general > reset > restore

Then it can connect to Apple server and download the latest update (while I believed it was already on the latest anyhow), so at that moment it has no problem connecting to the internet, it seems..

Download iOS 5.3 then enter dfu on your atv. Once atv is at dfu hook to OS with iTunes check sever then force iTunes to restore to your 5.3 iOS atv ipsw. To put atv in dfu remove all cords from it plug in power and immediately press play & pause on silver atv remote for 7 sec light should be blinking fast, then hook micro USB to OS from atv. Look online on how to restore to desired ipsw for your OS using iTunes. Windows hold shift. Mac hold alt, I think. :stuck_out_tongue:

This sounds like it'll either fix it or launch a war with Nicaragua .

Since it still being signed it should work. Nice, lol :stuck_out_tongue:
