With the new “Detect Commercials and mark for skip” option, is there a way I can apply that to existing recordings, or am I stuck with it only being on new recordings?
From what I’ve read, it will eventually apply to old recordings, but I don’t know if it can be forced. So, PMS will get around to it at some point while running scheduled tasks.
I’ve installed the update that includes 3rd option to mark commercials and skip on new recordings and set that as my default DVR setting.
After watching a few recordings, I can confirm that recordings that took place prior to this update now have “skip ads” when watching. So some process went back to mark commercials on existing recordings without other input from me.
Does it only add commercial markers to old Plex recordings? What about recordings from elsewhere like TiVo? I’ve used the 3rd option to mark commercials, but I’m not seeing “skip ads” when I attempt to play and there are no commercial marks in the XML file for my TiVo recordings. It seems to be ignoring anything not recorded in Plex, although that seems a bit odd so I’m wondering if there’s some other issue or maybe a setting that I’m missing.
It happens during Scheduled Tasks provided you edit the advanced settings of the TV Shows library and set Ad detection to “For all items” . I would only do this if your DVR DETECT COMMERCIAL settings were set to “Detect commercials and mark for skip”.
Thank you! I’m a recent Plex Pass user and was struggling with this also. Not easily found, but it is there at the bottom.
Interesting. I’ll check it again tomorrow. After I set it and saved, I see it scanning the shows in the activity button, so it seems it should be tagging them. But, I’ll check tomorrow. Thanks.
No luck. Scheduled tasks ran last night, but no commercial markings were added to the old recordings.
Anyone else having luck getting commercial marks added to old recordings from other DVR’s?
Are the Tivo files in .ts containers? Check the log files to see if the comskip operation is being run and maybe failing.
Yes, they’re in ts containers. Any suggestions on where to look in the log files? I have no idea what I’m looking at. I see FFMPEG errors “invalid frame dimension and invalid timestamps” in the Plex Media Scanner Deep Analysis log. And "Access is denied’ errors in the Plex Media Server log. I have the Plex service running. Not sure if that’s an issue.
I would search all the “Plex Media Server,1,2,3,4,5.log” for comskip messages. The Plex Media Scanner.logs would tell you if the file/directory was even checked.
Hmmm, comskip doesn’t show up anywhere in my logs. I probably just need to give up unless there’s a Plex Ninja that knows what to do.
There are certainly a slug of logs. I was able to find comskip in most of the following highlighted logs.
While I have not verified success yet, I do believe the process is working for me. I am using HDHomerun and the video files are in folders one level deep in mpg format.
Hmmm, I can’t figure out what’s going on then. Maybe my scheduled tasks aren’t running, cause when I looked a few minutes ago there were no updated logs from the time my scheduled tasks are supposed to start. Are you by any chance using the Plex Service?
Would need to see his logs covering scheduled task window to confirm what is going on.
Will this only work on .ts files? I convert my .ts files to MKV or MP4 and would like to be able to skip commercials in these files. I’ve found commercial removal hit or miss even after tweaking so want to leave them.
I would expect it to work on all supported file types.
as long as the library is configured to run ad detection, as shown @ Apply commercial skipping to existing recordings?
you may also want to check to ensure you have sufficient time allotted to the background task, if the allowed window is too short, it may never have time to finish.
Can you define what you mean? I am using Plex on a NAS.
Ok, sorry. I should’ve said Windows. You definitely aren’t using the Plex Service, but this is the one I was referring to: PMS as a service. I have a feeling this is interfering with some scheduled tasks for me. Haven’t been able to figure out how to switch back to no service, but plan to give that a try
Hi.
I’m running the newest Plex Version on my Debian Server with Plex Pass.
I’ve change the library with .ts records to use ad detection for all items as described some posts before.
I have waited two nights, but nothing happened. I can’t see comskip in my logs.
Scheduled task can use 5 hours to work.
Does anyone know what I could change to get it running?
Thx pr0
