Are podcasts stream only?

Are podcasts stream only - I don’t see an option to download them…

For now during podcast beta, they are stream only. Download / offline playback of podcasts is in the works.

Need to store podcasts locally since I often listen to podcasts while traveling. Germany has bad internet infrastructure so streaming is not an option

Totally understand and happy to share that download / offline playback of podcasts is well in the works, just not ready quite yet.

I hope you guys succeed at this…I have been spoiled by pocket casts - if you can beat their feature set you will be at the very top of the pile

When offline support is there…will we be able to use this system for local audiobooks?

Fantastic, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Audiobooks support is separate, and the team is aware of the interest the community has on that!

Glad to hear this - hope it all comes together :0

Are you going to release offline playback as a feature for all, or Plex Pass users only? Podcasts without this feature does not make sense for me, and I have no plan to move to Plex Pass.

Podcasts without offline playback for me doesn’t make sense either. I would really appreciate being able to download all of my podcasts to my phone and store them locally so that on planes/in spotty data areas I can still listen to them.

When do you plan to release the feature for Android?

Why not? Not much of an incentive to the devs if there’s no carrot you’d ever pony up for.

It wouldn’t make sense if server-side podcasts was not “in the works,” as otherwise it doesn’t even make sense in the context of Plex. Nobody needs “yet another podcast app.”

At this point it’s been so long I’m already just using greg plex downloader and a Music library with “remember position,” and that’s plenty good. Plus Pocket Casts has every podcast service beat anyway. Nobody needs “yet another podcast app.”

But if Plex gets actual server-side podcast functionality working, and users can rearrange & rename podcast episodes and add custom feeds, that’d finally be interesting.

Nobody needs “yet another podcast app.”

I agree with pretty much all of your points, the Podcast feature can potentially be ‘just another Podcast app’, but I have high hopes they will incorporate all the features that make the other Podcast apps great(auto trim), and downloading server side, notifications when new podcasts drop, etc

If they incorporate all that stuff, it makes Plex even more well rounded as a media center option. I absolutely love the fact I can listen on my phone, then finish on the Plex web app without spending extra on another app(stupid Pocket Casts).

I use Overcast as my normal Podcast app. What I would like is for the episode to be cached. Preferable to the local device and server. I don’t download my podcasts. In Overcast the current episode buffers when I start the episode and is then cached-so if I stop listening I can pick up again instantly where I left off without waiting for a rebuffed. Then when the episode is completed the cache clears so it does not stay in my local storage.

Downloading/offline playback for Podcasts will be free for all users

Is there a place I can see the future plans for the Podcast feature? I really want to be able to have my podcasts download into my server, so I can keep the ones I want to keep for later listening but it looks like this is not how it now works. Is functionality like this in the works? Otherwise I will figure out a different way to do it.

You can download in the android app. They do not go through the server, but directly to the app.

Thanks for the response.
What I’m really looking to be able to do was to have the files be loaded to the server so I could save episodes I liked.
