ARMv8 platform alpha testing - Discussion & Troubleshooting

Ok, I found it. Thank you

This impacts all PMS platforms. Bug report submitted.

This may be a silly question, but where can I find the latest installation package so I can help out testing?

Hello,

Any update when the final package will be available and not as currently is as Alpha testing ?

Thank you for your work !

I am also wondering when the new plex version will be uploaded.
Last version was for 1,5 month and plex has been updated for some times these times.

On my Synology DS218play I can only start 1 video at a time.
When start a video over the internet it is unable to play at all.

All my files are h.265 which my DS218play has the ability to handle. (h.265 at 4k should work and my files are h.265 1080P)

@Ventrex

To diagnose why you can only stream one video of HEVC at a time, you need to look at “Now Playing” and see what PMS is going. HEVC is the most demanding codec yet created and the ARMv8 is not an i7 or Xeon class processor.

I know but the ds218play should be able to do this.
See https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/compare/DS216play/DS218play

And 1 video is running.
Maybe armv8 cannot transcode h265 yet?

Synology’s publication showing it is capable is only when using their proprietary solution.
They assert it is capable but to date, even though they are a partner, no information has been made available to us about how to access and utilize that hardware. Until such time as they do, the ARMv8 will only transcode in software and, as such, it is not powerful enough to decode HEVC

The installation was surprisingly easy and it generally works well considering it is an alpha version.
Subtitles seems to be an improvement area. When selecting (SRT) subtitles for a movie it starts over most of the time. Otherwise it blacks out for a moment.
DS118.

What you’re seeing regarding subtitles is fundamental to how PMS works, not just the ARMv8.
I can’t help that.

I’m glad it’s otherwise working well for everyone. A lot of pre-alpha release testing was done and I’m still pushing forward here in the lab for the beta.

I`ve been using it for a month now on a ds218play, and it works well for me, 99 percent of the time i direct streamed and the audio is what got transcoded almost every time, but it worked very well for an alpha. For offline use i only transcoded some 720 p cartoons for my girls, and it handled that also acceptable. Waiting eagerly for the final version, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the reply, ChuckPA.
Are the subtitle problems related to the fact that Synology will not provide you access to their proprietary solutions? Because it works much better in Synology Video Station. There you can turn subtitles on and off with no delay/hick-ups.

Synology Video Station, obvious, has access to their proprietary hardware solution.

Subtitle ‘hickup’ as you call it is the transcoder dumping the video output buffer and refilling as you turn subtitles off. This takes a moment on an ARMv8 which doesn’t have HW assisting it. :man_shrugging:

Unfortunately beyond anything we can alter without said HW access.

In contrast, look at the Intel QSV where we do have access.

Thanks for clarifying. I do hope Synology will provide the access. If they do not I will certainly not buy a Synology NAS next time!

I’m told it’s been requested more times than can be counted.
That’s all I know.

So we all wait now untill Synology will reply and provide you guys the needed information?
If so. Next time I buy a QNAP.

To all:

ARMv8 is now in formal Forum Beta.

There are a couple known issues with the download (files didn’t compress correctly) but will be addressed with next Beta. Please read the first post thoroughly.

The effort is now being spearheaded by the CI team. I will continue to coordinate with them as well as support support here as always and be able to interface in every way with them.

The new QNAP builds are now available as Forum Preview.

  1. Volume selection & Migration as promised
  2. Known packaging bug we’re working on. (Size is bigger not smaller
 ooops)

Hello,

1st of all thanks for your work on bringing up PMS on the ARMv8, it works very well for me and I appreciate that much!

When I play live TV and I just close the Plex Media Player or the Plex Web window, the playback session will not close, at least not immediately. I don’t know if there is a timeout maybe. But when I stop that in the activity/current playback, it does not stop the parallel recording of the live TV which is always automatically started. If I stop the streaming correctly in the app, instead of just closing the window, it also immediately stops the recording as expected. I don’t know if this is an issue or works like this by design. Just wanted to report that behaviour
