I use inaudible to rip my audible files to mp3’s. It supports various formats and you can rip to a single mp3 or chapters. It can also combine a bunch of mp3s into 1 file. I tried out the audiobook tagger and didn’t like it for one reason → I wanted my main view to be “series” and don’t really care about viewing authors (other than as a tag or collection). I also didn’t like how it turned books in a series into tracks (I want to view each book’s summary). So I just setup a normal music library and set it to personal media so it didn’t try to pull any metadata. Then I use mp3tag to make sure all my files are tagged correctly (the way I want) and it works great! I did have to go through the manual process of populating some of the pictures & summaries in Plex, but it looks great now. Here’s how I do my organization:Artist → Series (Plex actually uses “Album Artist”)
Album → Book
Collections → Author
Record Label → Narrator
The problems you’ll run into with that are:
The series name is arbitrary, misleading, or doesn’t alphabetize with other related series. For example: The Malloreon is a follow-up series to The Belgariad, and the Eragon series is actually called The Inheritance Cycle which is the name of the final book not the first one.;
and one-offs don’t have a series name. Sometimes there are even one-offs that follow a series but don’t belong to it, like Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress pertain to the world of The Belgariad/Malloreon but are not part of either series.
Organizing by series instead of author is only important if a series/franchise has multiple authors like Star Trek or Star Wars does.

I see your point, but I disagree. I have hundreds of books in my library and for most of them, I have no idea who the author is off-hand, making searching by that method annoying. Also, some authors have multiple series (like Brandon Sanderson). Under the original method you’d just have to go into “Brandon Sanderson” then view all of his dozens of novels, rather than just going into the “Stormlight Archive” series.
I usually put books that don’t have a series under their own series or in the series of books that they pertain to (like if they’re a one-off novella in the stormlight archive series).
For series name I use my own titles, so for Eragon I would just call it “Eragon” not “The Inheritance Cycle”. I also use “Collections” and “Genre” to organize sub-sets of books together, like I have a Collection called “Cosmere” that is all of Brandon Sanderson’s books that belong to the cosmere.

What I would like is to have inline Collections for audio like were recently developed for Movies and TV Shows.
That way, when I select Album View at the top level it would display a one poster for a series (when applicable) instead of each book in a series, while also displaying one-offs.
EDIT: I just created a Feature Request for it.

Also, to answer my earlier question, no the 90% issue has NOT been resolved. e.g, if you have a 10 hour book, and have 45 minutes to go, you’re now more than 90% the book. If you close the book and reopen it, Plex will consider it complete and restart you from the beginning.Kudos to everyone who helped build this agent and guide, but it’s really a shame that Plex doesn’t provide this out of the box.
Thank you for following up. I never got a response on this before, and wanted to know before I made the jump from Booksonic to Plex. I am gonna keep using what works until plex gets it working. But yes, mad props to you guys coming as far as you have with what you have (or have not) been given!
Come on Plex, this has been a promised feature for years now!
Has anyone set this up with the Jailed Plugin on FreeNAS. I would really like to do this but seem to be stuck at getting the unsupported app plug-in. I have it in the Plugin directory that I could find and it doesn’t seem to show up. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
I was playing around with my Plex and putting some of my audio books over and I was wondering if this agent is still working? I have added it using the USA and it seems to be having issue matching. As in not finding anything.

It does work, but it will only find a match if the corresponding audiobook exists on (that particular domain of) Audible. That is, the first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic, is not available on Audible.com, so you will not find a match for that book while the agent is looking at .com. If you change the agent to .co.uk, it does find a match because the book is available there. (I just tried and confirmed both of these things on said book.)
If you bought a book from Audible, and the book is later removed from Audible’s store database (as has happened to me with the Star Wars radio dramas), then the agent will not be able to locate the match because the match no longer exists. The book might still exist in your Audible library, but when you visit its store page from there it will say “Shucks. This product isn’t available.”
That’s one of the larger issues with this agent—that Audible will remove books from their store database when they’re not available for sale anymore. There ought to be a better place from which to scrape audiobook metadata than Audible.
In case anyone else is trying this and doesn’t know about it, I have found the solution to one of my major roadblocks. I like to listen to audiobooks when I am falling asleep and I absolutely rely on Audible’s timer function. If you’re on iOS and playing media, you can set a timer using the standard timer in the clock app for any length of time, and have the end action as “Stop Playing”. My last issue to solve is the speedup function. I’m not sure I can go back to listening to books at normal speed.
I built out an entire website with a podcast generator literally a day before I saw this post, and I cannot decide if I’m annoyed or amused.
@chyron8472 - shout out to another Eddings fan!

You’re telling me Plex for iOS doesn’t have this option?

You can increase or decrease playback speed in 0.1x increments for audiobooks on Plex for Android.

Question on the library’s poster sizes…Is there any way to change the aspect ratio ? Since this is an audio library, the posters are square, but book covers would fit much better on “movie”/“tv show” sized posters.
I found this older feature request, but not much else: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/269453/feature-request-ability-to-change-poster-aspect-ratios

I’m not sure which way I would prefer, between book covers and album covers.
But presently, if I have a book cover that I prefer to use for an audiobook, I open the cover in GIMP and resize the canvas to a square shape. Effectively, I pillarbox the image. Oftentimes I also crop some of the top and/or bottom off of the original image in order to make the blank space on the sides smaller.

Hmm I may just have to do that. Trying to get these collections going has me wanting different sizes!
As I know, plex media tv supports to play a lot of drm free audiobooks such as the MP3 audiobooks from overdrive etc. But I don’t know why it just doesn’t supports Audible AA/AAX audible audiobooks. After searching online, I found that it all because of the DRM protection. All you need is to remove DRM from Audible Audiobooks here. After that, you should have no problem in enjoying Audible audiobooks anywhere.
DRmare is not free, and it not technically lossless because it still takes time to re-encode the file.
inAudible has a manual chapter marker editor; doesn’t require iTunes; can download your books straight from Audible; and I just confirmed it decrypted, tagged, and split a 4 hour book in 15 seconds.
Here is a log from inAudible for one of my books:
GetPCMDataOffset - PCM offset found @ 7 in C:\Users\david\Desktop\L. Frank Baum - The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Unabridged)\The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Unabridged).mp4

debugLog - [4/19/2018 2:35:33 PM] - Speedup is 1023x realtime.
urlLog - [4/19/2018 2:35:33 PM] - Done
DRmare will only convert 1/3 of a book without a license, and it certainly doesn’t decrypt files this fast. But most importantly to me, it doesn’t let you manually move the chapter markers.
…and I hate iTunes.

I have been an audiobook fan for over three years now and have a large collection that keeps on growing. I currently use the default program to listen to my audiobooks from where I purchase them from or via booksonic when they are from another source. While booksonic is great and it keeps a bookmark on where you left off it take time to set up a book in the program. I have been wanting to use plex for my audiobooks for about a year and have been looking into how to do it. What I recently found out is that plex has the ability to perform this task but it is confusing and not worth it if you cannot have metadata to be imported. Until Macrolinux built a great metadata agent Reddit - Dive into anything which works great but require a specific way to setup. So with the last piece of the puzzle completed for plex, I can finally use plex for my books (this include remembering my last location). This is my guide and everything that I know about using plex for my books.A. Assumptions:
- Plex server is running on your system
- Audiobooks are in a mp3 format.
- I am a plexpass user, I have do not know how this works as a non-plexpass user.
B. Software required:
- Plex “Duh”
- MP3TAG Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)
C. Plex Setup:
Setup Metadata agent for plex follow the link Reddit - Dive into anything, I found that the i could not follow the guide to well but I found it is available from the unsupported plex app store. Install the plex app store to make your life easier, https://youtu.be/nMTMA7NuGoA .
Setup plex library
a. Click on add library and select music type.
b. Name the library anything you like.
c. Browse for your media. Note: I use my own individual folder with no other media in it other than audiobook mp3’s. I recommend this method as I have not tried it with anyway else.
d. Click next Very Very import, create a basic music library. Do not select premium plex library! Note: IF you donot see the next setups delete library and start over.
e. If you have added the metadata agent correctly you will have the ability to change the agent to audiobooks.
f. SelectedInclude in dashboard
Use embedded tags
Store track progress “Very important and it works”
Manually Select Audible Site (if unchecked, library language is used to determine the best site) Select audible site to use www.audible.com
D. Setup Audiobook
- Use mp3tag to edit the audiobook tag. Edit the tag in this format: Highly recommend, cut and past information from audible as it needs to be exactly how audible sets it up.
a. Artist: Use this for the author
b. Album: Book name.
c. Save tag.
d. Save file with book name. You do not have to put them in a folder unless you have multiple parts, then I recommend.- Setup folder with Book Name
- Save file name as such: bookname_Part 1 Note this format allows plex to recognize the multiple books as one book in the library.
E. Playback
- The remember position works for android and iOS. Please follow as per screenshots. The following screenshots are for android.
Imgur: The magic of the InternetImgur: The magic of the Internet
Imgur: The magic of the Internet
- If you don’t want to go to my drive folder or it does not work:
a. After you played your book and want to resume. DO NOT Click on play button again.
b. Scroll down on you sreen or find the name of the file with the time on it and click on it. A prompt with the last know location should come up.Done: Hope you enjoy.
this is not working for me. I installed the metadata agent and got the library setup, but anything I add to the library never gets any metadata downloaded. For example I have a Folder
Rangers Apprentice–>1 - The Ruins of Gorlan–>The ruins of gorlan.mp3
The tags I have set are:
Title: The Ruins of Gorlan
Contributing Artists: John Flanagan
Album Artist: Ranger’s Apprentice
Album: The Ruins of Gorlan
Year: 2006

It isn’t on Audible**.com**.
It is on Audible**.co.uk**.
If you want Plex to find it on Audible, you need to (temporarily) change the Audiobook Metadata Agent to point to .co.uk instead. Once the agent finds the book there and updates the metadata for it in Plex, you can change it back.
…or you can go to the book’s page on audible.co.uk and enter it in Plex manually.
