What was once an impossible idea is now very feasible.
There are multiple paid services that now offer API’s for real-time sporting event updates. One example (but not the only!) is sportsdata.io. Regular sports viewers would know these kind of API’s when seen in ESPN’s Gamecast system, among others.
With access to this kind of live data, Plex DVR developers could track live recordings of sporting events by matching the event with the API, then automatically extend those recordings until the game reaches a status of “Final”. Heck, they could probably use it to make sure the postgame recording (such as the annual post-Super-Bowl TV show) doesn’t actually start until the game ends.
These API’s are available for a wide range of sports, including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, NCAA Football and Basketball, major golfing events, NASCAR, and major tennis events.
Obviously the API would not be free for Plex, just like how guide listings aren’t free. But this would be a killer Plex feature to announce and advertise to the public: “With Plex Pass, you never have to worry about missing the end of your game again, even if it goes into triple overtime or 18 innings”.
