Hi Plex team, I’ve noticed a regression in the latest Plex for Android TV app (version 10.30.6.4151 [f1455a3f]) on my Onn 4K Pro (2023 model) running Android TV 12 (build from Dec 26, 2023). Until recently, Plex client used hardware decoding (HW) for both AV1 and HEVC (H.265) media files. Starting from version 10.30.6, Plex now transcodes these formats on the server side instead of playing them natively.
Server logs show:
ERROR - [FFMPEG] - No support for codec av1 profile 0.
ERROR - [FFMPEG] - Your platform doesn't support hardware accelerated AV1 decoding.
At the same time, the same AV1 and HEVC files play perfectly in other apps (like VLC or Jellyfin) on the same device — confirming that the device hardware supports both codecs. When using the same Plex server and files, other devices (like my friend’s TV) still play them directly with HW decode.
Details: Plex server is running on Asustor NAS (Intel CPU, hardware transcode available). Client device: Onn 4K Pro (model PCA2503003773). Android version: 12. Plex client: 10.30.6.4151 (f1455a3f). Behavior: Plex forces server-side transcoding of AV1/H.265, no “Direct Play” even at 20 Mbps. Expected: Onn 4K Pro should direct play AV1/H.265 in HW decode as before.
Please check the MediaCodec pipeline for AV1/H.265 on this device. It used to work fine in version 10.29.x — this seems like a regression introduced in 10.30.x.
Thanks for your time and for keeping Plex improving!
