So HW AV1 steam decoding works pretty well on my Mac server to appletv, no issues.
But AV1 chapter/preview generation is grinding my little cpu in to dust whenever I add new media, I would have thought that with the option enabled above it would also use the hardware encoding and generate the chapter and video previews.
Is there something im doing wrong or is this not supported as of yet?
I can’t find anything that confirms Apple Silicon supports AV1 HW encoding.
They definitely support HW encoding of h264, hevc, and prores.
They definitely support HW decoding of h264, hevc, prores, and av1 (the newer M-chips).
It’s my understanding that only NVIDIA built HW jpeg encoding into their GPUs.
Unless something changed, VPT thumbs are all jpeg images.
What many of us do, thanks to help from @Volts is change the rate of VPT thumbs from one every 2 seconds to one every 10sec of video. I find I can see plenty at that frequency to find my way around. It’s a hidden server setting listed in the Support Articles.
