AV1 Playback whitelisting for devices

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7468
Player Version#: 9.31.0.3817

Hello.

I was just wondering how we go about getting additional devices whitelisted for direct play of AV1. My phone, a Sony Xperia 5 III (XQ-BQ62, if you want the exact regional variant) does support AV1, but Plex is still transcoding media when I play AV1 files on it.

Looks like this support began in the 5 mk II, but not the original Xperia 5 the year before. Same for the Xperia 1 Mk. II, the 10 mk II, and also the one-off Pro-I model

So, all Sony smartphones since 2020 have supported the AV1 codec.

The Sony Xperia 5 III has a Snapdragon 888 which doesn’t have AV1 hardware. Qualcomm didn’t add AV1 hardware support until the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2:

I’m guessing Sony means AV1 software decoding when they listed it as being supported.

I think the support is on the GPU side, actually.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear but I was talking about the iGPU on the Snapdragon 888 SoC which is the Adreno 660. The Adreno 660 does not support AV1:

That website you provided is providing incorrect info.

Just to be clear, if your phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon and released before 2023, it doesn’t have AV1 hardware support.

Thanks. I was looking at the info for 650 (from the mark II) just now and it listed no AV1 support, so I was wondering what was up.

I guess I’ll just stick to using my Jellyfin server for those programs, since I can direct play my AV1 files on my phone fine in Findroid.

I’m surprised Sony doesn’t include an AV1 software decoder.

My Google Pixel 3 and Samsung S22 can direct play AV1 with Plex and they don’t have AV1 hardware. They only transcode when I play 4K AV1.
