Avoid unnecessary transcoding

Is there any way to stop the server trans-coding everything? My PC is very capable of playing any format thrown at it but the server insists on trans-coding. This is especially obvious on x265 HEVC files where my PC can play them just fine but the less capable server really struggles are often pauses to catch up.

PMS only transcodes if the client reports the devices can’t support the codec/container. For example, if you play a movie using the web client it will need to transcode pretty much everything, but if you use the desktop PMP then it will play pretty much everything directly.

What client(s) are you using?

Mostly the web client as it is the best behaving for a mouse. I have "Plex Home Theater " as well but it still seems to trans-code the x265’s and in any case is horrible with a mouse. Is there a better PC client?

The desktop PMP is going to be the best Plex created application for direct play. OpenPHT works great too from what I’ve read. Plex Home Theater was dropped quite a while ago and is no longer supported.

You can run PMP in web mode or full screen mode - both modes will direct play your media.

I have tried the app from the windows store with no success. I get audio but a black screen.

I’ll try the PMP download now.

That seems to work perfectly, when you go to the apps page on the website the windows store app is listed first and for me at least is buggy, I hadn’t realised the “Windows” app and the “Plex Media Player” app were two separate things.

Now working without trans-coding, thanks.

Yeah, the Plex app from the Windows store is not very good. Also, it has to abide by all the sandbox rules that the apps have to follow, so it ends up transcoding a lot if I recall correctly.

They would be better just scrapping it, it doesn’t do anyone any favors to have a very public and more easily accessible app that sucks!

Easiest way to get PMP that I know of.
