Backup did not restore anything

I did what the guide said and backed up /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/

I then reinstalled my server that being my Linux Server a distro of CentOS called ClearOS

I reinstalled all my apps from their marketplace and proceeded to update Plex to it’s most recent version. I then stopped the presses (stopped plex service)

mounted my drives set up their UUID in fstab and prodeeded to overwrite the contents of the Plex backup… that made the server no longer start so I decided to not copy everything…

IE:

Codecs
Crash\ Reports
logs
plexmediaserver.pid
Plug-in\ Support

everything else I copied over

Plex started fine this way and all my settings and server name was in but my Library was empty…

so maybe I just need to link the drives again, shouldn’t need to since they are mounted via UUID to the exact same locations as they were before the reinstall so all links should be identical.

so I linked them and it started redwnloading all the metadata and none of my watched shows are marked watched anymore I lost which episodes I had on deck and everything.,

for future… how do I back up the watched list and on deck list if that’s not included in the data that I backed up.

Good morning. This is my first thoughts FWIW…

~ You completely have a blank sys
~ You first install PMS (virgin/clean)
~ See if that functions verified ok
~ Then you paste over your old/original lib folder
~ You verify with a tool like mc (Midnite Commander) that the replacement lib chown/chmod is IDENTICAL to what the virgin PMS install had. For example…
Permissions: 40755 Owner name: plex Group name: plex

So at that point you should have what you had before because its the filesystem itself that’s gonna handle the re-directs and directs. Lemme know gl

-wbm
ps. oh yes turn off “Library Auto Update” in settings before you paste over the old lib, that I believe is in the directions for migrating IIRC

It is abolutely crucial when you start the backup that the source Plex server is not running.
Otherwise the main database file will be corrupt when restored.
You can try to replace the corrupted file with one of the automatic backups
(of course only do anything with these files while Plex server is shut down!)

Thus, you failed to restore one of the most crucial parts of PMS. The whole database  It’s in Plug-in Support\Databases

Another vital point in the guide is handling UID/GID changes between system. tar retains UID/GID. If the chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver is skipped, it will never start

setting the permissions and adding the database folders fixed it.

thank you all!
