Best cheap Windows server for Plex?

Sure but if I stream 4k there is no need for decompression so 4k DLNA should not be an issue. Either Plex works or not

Plex is not DLNA.
And whether a client can direct play a file or not is depending on a number of things. Traditionally, the FireTV and Chromecast devices require transcoding under quite a large number of circumstances.

Interesting so transcoding might be needed even if the stream is at the same resolution … is it a codec problem? Is there somewhere a chart with all major devices and what they do and what they don’t transcode, what they downscale live (or maybe upscale live) and what they don’t ?

About DLNA I thought that was the standard as my old (2010) tv sees a DLNA folder when my Plex Server is on.

There is no such chart. Only reports of users here in the forums.

While Plex has a DLNA part, it only serves as a fallback option for really old devices and provides almost none of the Plex features.

And there are many people that, as I do, turn off that DLNA part conpletly as useless to our needs.

In fact I believe that DLNA is another place where Plex defaults something to “on” that should be defaulted to “off.” I do not have numbers but I do know that zero of the Plex families I know use DLNA at all. Whenever I aid in installing Plex one of the things I do is ask if the folks will be using DLNA and, so far, the answer has always been no. Actually most of the time I get blank looks followed by the question: “What is DLNA?”

I strongly doubt that more than one in fifty Plex users use DLNA and I “think” it is probably less than one in a hundred.

Plex Dlna. Sure I know. Luckily my 2010 Samsung could mount a Plex version but as I said I can see Dlna service too.

Anyway… I called Amazon. Fire Stick 4k is yer not sold in Italy. I can by on ebay on parallel market but they say that Prime Video will not work… at least until Italian Version is out… and could be not even after (if I buy German or UK version).

I’ll ask for a refund for my FireStick. I will do so on the very last day of the 30days and from there I think I will have 60 days to actually ship back… and this will give me some time to test and also to decide for another solution. I obviously like Apple TV etc but I spent 150€ on a Minix years ago and really used just the basic apps anyway… so… let’s see.

Thanks for your help

FYI, I returned something to Amazon earlier this week. I had 14 days to get it to Amazon after submitting the request online. I’m in the US. Not sure if rules are the same if in other countries.

There are many useful tech standards that very much under the radar to the general non expert populace, certainly doesn’t make it useless or unwanted.
Most people don’t know what is there because no one is marketing it or Apple hasn’t told them about it.

other than perhaps nvidia shield, there are essentially NO TV’s, or streaming devices that are explicitly designed to play RIPPED 4k blurays.

smart tvs and streaming devices are designed for streaming OTA services like netflix/hulu/etc, which are maybe 25% the bitrate of a 4k bluray, and further do not use any HD audio.

I would hazard a guess that no one expected 4k blurays to even become rippable in the first place, let alone expect millions of people to rip and store them locally so they could be re-streamed via plex or other media solutions.

So the fact that we can even do so is incredible, however there is zero reason to expect media and device makers to intentionally make it easier to rip and use content for personal use, because they all make money from the streaming services instead.
