First post here. I’ve used Plex for many years and just love the way it works. So far I’ve just run Plex server on a MacBook and usted it to watch movies on my TV using the built in Plex client.
I’m moving in to a new place though, and getting a new TV. I’d like to be able to watch 4K/10bit/HDR/x265 content on this new TV via Plex, and I usually watch with SRT subtitles so I think it’ll have to be transcoded. I doubt my laptop is up for the task. So basically my questions are:
Can Plex transcode/stream a 4K 10 bit HDR x265 file with SRT subs?
What kind of hardware do I need - something like a modern Ryzen/Coffee Lake setup or is this not that demanding? Could I get away with running a MPB as a server?
What kind of device play this kind of file via Plex client? New 4K Apple TV?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if I posted in the wrong place.
I have an Nvidia Shield and a ATV 4K.
The ATV 4K is for me the only client with a UI that doesn’t totally suck.
Well that’s unfair actually. If I could create a UI. It would be the ATV 4K. As a non Apple fanboy, tvOS is the last client I tried and the first I truly love.
That said what’s your planned file container.
If you’re an MP4 guy just go ATV 4K.
If you’re MKV, you’re probably still good as it will direct play .srt
It will choke on embedded pgs etc…
It really is a close call for me between the Shield and the ATV 4K.
The default Shield app is truly hideous.
But there are other Plex options for the Shield like Plex for Kodi and my favoured MrMC.
However I still feel the Shield is a little more powerful and a lot more flexible.
As for the server, well I have a Kaby Lake.
I guess it depends on your usage…sharing with friends etc.
Honestly though if you are an MP4 guy don’t hesitate. Just go tvOS.
