Best Encoding Option for all

I’ve got a lot of videos I’d like to convert so they can be used for direct play. What is the best container format for the following devices/browsers:

Mac - uses chrome and safari
Roku
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Chromecast
Android
iOS
Android Smart TV

The idea is to eventually kill off all transcoding. Any thoughts? h264 with aac .mp4? thanks

MP4 H.264/AAC or AVC/AAC is the most widely accepted format across the most devices.

If you are using HandBrake (free for PC/Mac) try starting with the Fast 1080p 30 preset, then turn on Web Optimised and on the Video tab turn on fast decode and then adjust the audio, subtitle settings etc. as needed. All other settings should be acceptable.

If you use subtitles, then consider burning them in. Be aware that if you do burn in the subtitles, you will not be able to turn them on/off or remove them, you would need to replace the file. Burnt in subtitles would help avoid transcoding though.

That should get you Direct Playing your files on all of your listed devices.

Thanks. Personally I use XMedia Rencode but yeah

I use XR every day for remuxing/audio manpulation-normalization/sub title conversions, but use Handbrake for video encoding. Handy Handbrake Guide in my signature.
