Hi guys I am planning to get a Synology DS218+ to setup a budget NAS for my Sony Android tv…the question now is can i forget about trancoding and direct play on my tv?
I tested some 4k movies now setup on my pc plex server…all of them play original quality on my tv without issues…so does DS218+ capable to do so?
I am surprised no one on here suggested freenas?
You can make a frankenstien PC throw a bunch of drives in there install freenas and then install Plex as a plugin. The freenas costs you nothing epsecially if you have spare parts laying around you can throw together a PC real quick. You spend money if you want, its up to you.
I personally ran plex on freenas for years before I went to windows server just for the comskip lol which I believe the freebsd version supports now anyway. I just pointed my new server to my freenas and let it rebuild. I still have the freenas I use it for the plex media but I have plex running on a windows server separately now.
Edit:typos
Best thing is its Unix based so the hardware don’t have to be amazing it can be minimal and will run great. And Freenas has come along away to make it more point and click to get it going. You would install freenas just like you would windows via a USB stick. You can even run freenas from a USB stick. You don’t have to install it onto a drive per say if you don’t want to. But its really lightweight and rock solid. If I didn’t have my windows server doing other things I would probably go back to it running out of the freenas itself again. But I kind of like having it the way it is now. More redundant in that no one thing is all on one device.
Edit: Corrected
Sorry, but you disqualified with the first sentence here. It is NOT Linux based. It’s freebsd, totally different thing.
I updated the post to be more accurate. The point I was making to most people they know windows and they know linux. And its more lightweight to use the ladder.
Fair enough, maybe I was a bit harsh.
No worries!
