Can anyone comment on how a 2021 Mac mini handles 4K > 1080p transcodes with the newish M1 processor?
M1 benchmarks 5,000 points higher to the Intel i5/i7 in the NUC but does it have any additional instructions like Intel Quick Sync and if so does that disadvantage the M1 in any way?
Apple uses their own implementation for hardware encoding/decoding of video on Apple Silicon. It’s not QuickSync compatible. In order to utilize the capabilities of the M1, the Plex team would have to code for this specifically.
The M1 is a beast when it comes to video encoding, but in a Plex context, that only helps if the Plex developers update their code to leverage it.
