Let’s say I have unlimited money. What do you all recommend for the absolute best rig to handle Plex for many users?
Hmm hmm hmmm, yes. Generic. What are the specs on one of those?
That list is from 2018. There are probably several much more powerful devices by now.
Even with the unlimited budget I think we need to know more. How many simultaneous transcoding/tone mapping jobs you need is one of the most important things to figure out, and that has to do with your bandwidth, your users’ bandwidth, and the kinds of displays they use. Oh, and if they need to transcode audio, or burn in subtitles. There are so many variables!
Also, is media storage part of the Plex server, or is it already handled by another device? Wherever media is stored, it could run out of bandwidth with enough simultaneous users.
To handle “many” users you might need multiple servers… In a data center.
That said I am also curious about the maximum performance you can get out of a single system.
That is why I tried to produce a joking response. We just do not know enough for anything serious.
Even the word “unlimited” can actually mean very different things in even slightly different contexts: If I say to someone, “You have an unlimited budget” and Bill Gates says the same thing the meanings would be very different.
Words mostly have pretty fixed meanings but who says them and how they are said and what they are said about can change their meanings more than a little.
