Bluray + 4k UHD Bluray - Roku is my most common player

I have some movies where I have both the bluray disk and the 4k UHD bluray disk. Do people usually rip just one of them and let transcoding to it’s best job when necessary? Or do people tend to rip the bluray and play the 4k UHD physically?

I assume it likely depends highly on how beefy the PMS is (mine is an 8th gen Intel NUC core i5 w/ storage on a Synology NAS) and possibly the version of the player.

Thoughts?

I rip 4k, and 1080, then convert 1080 to 720.

there is no reason to keep a huge 1080 rip if you have a 4k that can direct play.

anyone not direct playing a 4k, can eat 720.

there are a number of ways you can do it (4k), only you can decide what is best for you.

this may or may not be helpful, read the whole thread @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you

“beefy” has nothing to do with it… You shouldn’t transcode 4K content. I am sure TeknoJunky will hop in here and give you his page on the rules of 4K, he’s good like that. Personally, I maintain 2 Libraries, a 4K Library, and a 1080p library.

This is because transcoding a 4K with Plex currently results in washed out colors due to no tone mapping. So, I watch the 1080p movies on screens/devices that don’t support 4K, and I watch 4K on my 4K devices and they all direct play…

Edit: You hit enter like a couple seconds before me @TeknoJunky , LOL

Thanks both… So, rip both and let Plex+Player decide the best route (direct play of resolution XXX or transcode if necessary). Possibly even augment with other conversions (720p) if warranted.

EDIT: Just read more. Jason implies having 2 libraries (instead of 2 copies in a single library). I’ll look into that as well.

many like myself keep 4k in a separate library.

this lets you limit access to shared users. they never even see 4k (I don’t have the upload that can direct play 4k).

other people do not want the hassle of maintaining separate content, and either go with 1 combined library with 4k+1080/720, or just 4k only and transcode (and accept that colors can be washed out).

all of which has their each pro/cons.

its up to you what works best for you.

Yep, I use 2 separate libraries (Movies 4K and Just Movies for my movie content, and TV 4K and TV for my TV show content, Game of Thrones Season 01 in 4K HDR is pretty damn nice), unlike Tekno I do share my 4K content with others, and have the bandwidth for them to direct play (although, since 5-7 remote streams was getting a little crowded, I did reduce the average bitrates for my 4K library so the Gigabit could breath a little).

4K… Ah, would be lovely… But all seems like a bit of a pipe dream for me at the moment!

Although I have quite a nice rig, none of it is 4K capable yet, so would need to replace the TV, AV Receiver and HTPC… And lets not even start about storage! Geeeze!.. Currently have 10.9TB of usable storage, with only 800GB of free space, and converting to x265 like mad to keep up!
