Booting USB on old MacMini is not working

I am trying to replace my OSX 10.6.8 + OpenPHT 1.5 with the embedded version, but my mac mini does not want to boot that usb stick. The stick does work, I can boot on my PC and my 2013 MacBook, so it is something to do with the Mini. I strongly suspect it is related to the fact that the Mini seems to have a 32 bit EFI BIOS. I tried to add a a EFI boot 32 bits file from here:

github.com/jfwells/linux-asus-t100ta/raw/master/boot/bootia32.efi

but it has not helped. Does anybody have suggestion?
Thanks in advance

I’ll up the ante a bit. After struggling for 3 days, I have discovered that I can add syslinux 32 bit EFI files to the image, which at least allows the boot options to appear (booting with reFind BTW). But unfortunately when I select either Live or Installer, it reboots after a few seconds.
Anyonewith an idea what could be wrong, knowing it is a 64 bit Intel CPU, what could cause the crash loading the kernel?
